DU Men’s Lacrosse Face No. 20 Albany at Home Saturday

Pioneers welcome Great Danes to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for a 1 p.m. face-off

DENVER – The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team (0-2) returns home this weekend for its first home game under head coach Bill Tierney, as No. 20 Albany comes to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

SCOUTING ALBANY
UAlbany was picked third in the America East Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The Great Danes return 27 letterwinners from last year’s 7-7 squad. Brian Caufield earned honorable mention All-America recognition and led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 27 assists. Joe Resetarits (34 goals, 9 assists) was named to the All-America East first team as a freshman. Joe Pompo and Dave Brock each accounted for 19 points. Mark Cometti and Kyle Crotty are among a group of veteran players in the midfield. Mark Kelly, a second-team all-conference selection, leads the defense, while goalkeeper John Carroll had a .496 save percentage as a freshman. Head coach Scott Marr is in his 10th season. He has led the program to four NCAA appearances.

PIONEER CHECK-IN
Denver opened the 2010 season on the road, dropping a tough 15-9 loss to the No. 1 ranked Syracuse Orangemen and then traveled to Jacksonville University to face the first-year Dolphins, dropping a 13-12 triple overtime loss. Sophomore Zander Buteux (Madison, N.J.) led the Pioneers between the pipes, recording a career-high 17 saves against the Orangemen and then following it up with another 17-save performance against the Dolphins. Sophomore Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) led the Pioneers for the week on the offensive end as he tallied seven points on six goals and one assist, while freshman Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) and senior John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) finished with five points each.

ECAC WEEKLY HONOR
For his efforts, the goalie earned the team’s first ECAC weekly honor as he was tabbed the Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Buteux led the Pioneers in goal this week, recording two career performances between the pipes for the No. 18 University of Denver Pioneers. After relieving starting goalie Peter Lowell midway through the second quarter against the No. 1 Syracuse Orangemen, Buteux made a career-high 17 saves, facing 30 shots and allowing only seven goals. Buteux then started against Jacksonville, making another 17 saves on 49 shots faced, allowing 13 goals. Buteux finished the week with a 63.0 save percentage as he totaled 34 saves on 79 shots faced, while allowing 20 goals in 120 minutes of action.
