Women’s Rule Changes

A few rule changes and updates were passed at September’s WDBOG meeting for the women’s game. Below is a brief overview of some of the updates.

Rule 2 - Equipment and Uniforms
1. The requirement to use a colored mouthpiece goes into effect in the 2009 season.
2. New uniform requirements will be announced to go into effect for the 2013 season.
3. In addition to the regular yellow ball, use of a slightly textured ball will be allowed and use of a bright orange ball will be allowed. Home team will choose which ball to use.

Rule 7 - Penalty Administration
1. A team will play short from the first card issued rather than waiting until the fourth card.
2. Any player or coach receiving a red card will not be allowed to participate in the team’s next game.

Youth Rules
In addition to Level A, B, and C, a new level for youth play will be announced. Level FC will allow full checking for the 7th and 8th grade age group player if they and the league they play in meet all of the following criteria:
1. All players on the team must be in 7th or 8th grade, or on U15/U13 teams. No U12 players allowed. Players must average at least 3 years of playing experience.
2. All coaches of participating teams must have US Lacrosse Level 1 coaching certification.
3. The league/program must be in existence for at least 5 years, and must progress players through from Level B or C to Level A before playing Level FC.
4. Games must be officiated by two US Lacrosse rated officials, both of whom must have held a Local rating for a minimum of 2 years.
5. The league must receive approval from the local umpiring board chair that there are sufficient numbers of qualified umpires to adequately cover the games.
6. Any check to the head in a Level FC game will be penalized with a mandatory red card.

US Lacrosse Foundation Putting Tournament in Denver

The US Lacrosse Foundation is pleased to bring the US Lacrosse Foundation Putting Tournament to Denver for 2008! This one-of-a-kind event will be held on Tuesday, September 23 at the Denver Country Club, and you won’t want to miss being with us for the lacrosse event of the year!

As a member of the Colorado Lacrosse Foundation, the local chapter of US Lacrosse, we hope that you will join us for the evening featuring a highly competitive putting tournament, dinner, prizes, and a night of great lacrosse camaraderie!

Proceeds will benefit the US Lacrosse Foundation, which supports US Lacrosse’s efforts to develop the sport nationwide. Also, a portion of all money raised will go directly back to the Colorado Lacrosse Foundation to help promote the growth of the sport at the local level.

Classroom: Ain’t No Thing - Zac Jungers’ ‘chicken wing’ might be the last legal hold in lacrosse

Who ever said Bill Tierney’s boys couldn’t get creative? Princeton University is, after all, an Ivy League institution known for its ingenuity.

But Denver Outlaws defenseman Zac Jungers is quick to clarify that the “chicken wing,” which he calls the last, true legal hold, evolved more as a matter of brute force than creativity.

85 Players Advance in Tryouts for U.S. Women’s National Team

BALTIMORE - US Lacrosse has announced the list of players who have advanced to the second round of tryouts for the U.S. women’s national team. 83 from an original pool of 220 have been asked to return August 1-3 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County for the second round of tryouts. The first round of tryouts was held over Memorial Day weekend at the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament at St. Paul’s School.

Players are trying out for a spot on the U.S. women’s elite and developmental teams. From those two teams, the final roster for the U.S. women’s national team that will compete in the 2009 World Cup will be picked. The 2009 International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations’ World Cup takes place in Prague, Czech Republic, June 18-27, 2009.

2008 Men’s U-19 Team

The Men’s Under-19 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship will be held July 3-12, 2008 in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. The 23-player U.S. squad was selected following four days of tryouts in July, 2007.

The U.S. team enters this summer’s tournament as the five-time defending ILF Under-19 champion with a 29-0 all-time record in U-19 international play.

Honor Those Who Make a Difference

US Lacrosse is committed to supporting the growth of youth lacrosse throughout the United States. The dedication of individuals around the country, who have devoted countless hours to make lacrosse happen in their communities, has been the driving force behind the successful growth of youth lacrosse. Each year, US Lacrosse honors outstanding contributors to youth lacrosse programs. The goal of the youth awards program is to nationally recognize individuals who have made contributions to the game over time while supporting the mission and vision of US Lacrosse:

“We envision a future which offers people everywhere the opportunity to discover, learn, participate in, enjoy and ultimately embrace the shared passion of the lacrosse experience.”

Those awarded will be recognized at an annual breakfast at the US Lacrosse National Convention.

Equipment Grants Program

2008 Application Timetable
April 18 - Grant application available online
September 15 - Postmark deadline for sending completed applications
November 2008 - Notification letters sent to all grant applicants
February 2009 - Equipment shipped to awarded programs

Interested in starting a lacrosse program but unable to fund it? The US Lacrosse Equipment Grant may be just the answer you’re looking for. Grants can include a full team’s worth of equipment (sticks and protective gear) and are awarded to programs within their first year of operation. Applicant programs must demonstrate a financial need and priority is given to those residing in a state or region where lacrosse opportunities are currently limited or absent.

2008 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Class

The induction class for 2008 for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame has been selected and approved by the US Lacrosse Board of Directors. This year’s class will be inducted in a ceremony on Nov. 8 at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.
