DAN CAREY & CHRIS MCELROY RECOGNIZED

West All-Stars honored for Sportsmanship and Community Service

05/05/2008

Colorado’s Dan Carey was named the 2008 Sportsmanship Award winner, while Edmonton’s Chris McElroy won the league’s Community Service Award.

Carey scored 22 goals and 27 assists in 11 games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. The 26-year-old left-hander has played three seasons for the Mammoth since graduating from Canisius College. He won the NLL Championship with the Mammoth in 2006 and appeared in the 2007 and 2008 NLL All-Star Game.

Carey is admired by both teammates and opponents. In 43 career games, Carey has accumulated only 11 penalty minutes, none in 2008. Carey even apologized to Calgary’s Steve Dietrich after he delivered a shot which knocked out the veteran goalkeeper in the season opener.

McElroy has worked tirelessly towards charitable causes and bringing lacrosse to the forefront in the Edmonton area. The Rush’s team captain worked with a number of charities this year, including the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the St. Valentine’s Day Hair Massacre. He also continually promotes the Rush and the sport of lacrosse at every opportunity.

The 25-year-old defender scooped 101 loose balls in 16 games this season. The four-year veteran has been with the Rush since the team’s inception in 2006.

LATE BURST ROLLS ROUGHNECKS PAST MAMMOTH

Like two heavyweights in the ring, the Colorado Mammoth and Calgary Roughnecks exchanged blows for 60 playoff minutes on Saturday night. The Mammoth punched hard, taking a two-goal lead with eight minutes remaining. Then the Roughnecks counterpunched.

In a game that had seven ties and four lead changes, the Roughnecks rode the last swing of momentum to a 15-13 victory in front of a stunned crowd of 15,554 at Pepsi Center.

The victory sends the Roughnecks to the West Division Final next weekend, while the loss ends the Mammoth’s sixth National Lacrosse League season.

Trailing 12-10, Calgary exploded for five goals by five different players late in the game to win the single-elimination playoff game. A Mammoth goal by Nenad Gajic with one second remaining did little to soothe the sting of losing a postseason game on its home floor for the second year in a row.

“We battled hard and put ourselves in a position to win,” said Mammoth coach Bob McMahon, who guided the team to a 9-7 regular-season record in his first year behind the bench. “We just couldn’t close them out when we had the chance.”

Jamie Shewchuk led the Mammoth with seven points on two goals and five assists, stepping up offensively in place of Dan Carey, who missed his sixth consecutive game because of a concussion. Eight others scored goals for the Mammoth, including two each by Jason Wulder, Chris Gill and Gavin Prout.

Jeff Shattler and Kaleb Toth each scored three goals for the Roughnecks while Tracey Kelusky added two goals and five assists.

Gee Nash took the loss in goal for the Mammoth, stopping 37-of-51 shots. The Roughnecks last goal was scored on an empty net. Steve Dietrich earned the victory in goal for Calgary, making 29 saves on 42 shots.

Shattler scored early in the third quarter to give Calgary a 7-5 lead, but the Mammoth responded to tie the game on two blistering outside shots by Prout. Jordan Cornfield then scored with a perfect shot over Dietrich’s shoulder to give the Mammoth an 8-7 lead.

After a three-goal run by the Roughnecks tied the score at 4-4, Shewchuk scored to end a 13-minute goalless drought for the Mammoth. The 5-4 lead lasted less than two minutes though, and the Roughnecks scored twice to take a 6-5 halftime lead.

The Mammoth scored four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.

FAMILIAR FOES MATCHED UP ONCE AGAIN IN PLAYOFFS

The premier West Division rivalry is renewed in the playoffs for the third time on Saturday when the Colorado Mammoth hosts the Calgary Roughnecks at 7 p.m.

The teams have met twice before in the National Lacrosse League postseason – both games were at Pepsi Center – and each time the victor continued on to win the league championship.

The Mammoth won two of three games against the Roughnecks this season, including a 10-9 victory on Opening Night.

“It’s been a real good rivalry over the last four years,” Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. “We had three close, hard-fought games against (Calgary) this season and we’re anticipating a fourth.”

Roughnecks rallying
After a midseason slump had Calgary moving out of the playoff picture at 4-9, the team came together to win its last three games and grab third place in the division.

“We’ve started to play better of late,” Roughnecks general manager Kurt Silcott said. “We have a lot of leaders on this team and a lot of guys with character.”

One leader that has made a late-season impact is Josh Sanderson, acquired from Toronto at the trading deadline. Sanderson has tallied six goals and eight assists in four games since joining the Roughnecks, including four points on the power play.

He’s a quarterback, a feeder, and he sees the floor well,” Silcott said. “He’s a very knowledgeable lacrosse player. Our power plays have been better with Josh out there.”

“Underdog” Mammoth braces for playoff battle

Two years removed from the National Lacrosse League championship, the Colorado Mammoth enters Saturday’s playoff opener against Calgary in the odd position of underdog.
The label fits, even though Colorado is playing at the 18,007-seat Pepsi Center, in front of the NLL’s largest fan base, and has the higher seed: No. 2. The Mammoth is coming off an 11-6 loss at San Jose in which it was outscored 4-0 in the fourth quarter.
“We’re clearly the underdog. We’re slumping, if you will, and they are surging,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said of a Roughnecks team that is at nearly full strength after an injury-riddled stretch.

STEALTH STIFLES MAMMOTH’S BID FOR DIVISION TITLE

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Colorado Mammoth fell behind early in Saturday’s game, allowing five goals on the San Jose Stealth’s first six shots, and then battled back to within one, only to be shut out in the fourth quarter and lose.

Despite putting 15 more shots on goal than the Stealth, the Mammoth was stifled offensively in an 11-6 loss at the HP Pavilion. Both teams finished the National Lacrosse League regular season with 9-7 records, but the Stealth claimed the West Division title with the victory, by virtue of its 2-1 mark against the Mammoth this year.

As the second-place team, the Mammoth will host the third-place Calgary Roughnecks (7-9) in a West Division Semifinal playoff game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at Pepsi Center. San Jose will host the fourth-place Portland LumberJax (6-10) in the other semifinal.

After allowing five Stealth goals on six shots, Mammoth goaltender Gee Nash was replaced in favor of Chris Levis, who came on to stop 27-of-33 shots.

The Mammoth, trailing 5-2 after the first quarter, cut San Jose’s leads to 6-4 at halftime and 7-6 after three quarters. But the Stealth got goals from Colin Doyle, Cam Sedgwick, Gary Rosyski and Jeff Zywicki, and goaltender Anthony Cosmo stopped all eight shots he faced in the fourth quarter. Cosmo, who stopped 16-of-18 in the third quarter, finished with 48 saves on 54 shots.

Brian Langtry and Jamie Shewchuk both tallied two goals and two assists, leading the Mammoth with four points each. Captain Gavin Prout had two assists to finish the season with 67, tops in the NLL and just four shy of the league record.

Zywicki led the Stealth with three goals and Colin Doyle led all scorers with nine points on two goals and a game-high seven assists.

Time for some lacrosse - Mammoth, LaxFest highlight big weekend

Roll dodges and cradles take center stage this weekend on all levels, from the youngsters in the LaxFest, to the collegians at the University of Denver, to the Colorado Mammoth playing Saturday for the National Lacrosse League West Division title.
Boys and girls teams, grades 2 through 8, are eschewing their usual regular-season game sites across the Denver area to play Saturday on 18 fields at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. With 325 teams, LaxFest starts at 8 a.m. and is the largest youth lacrosse event west of the Mississippi River.
The University of Denver (9-5, 4-1 in the Great Western Lacrosse League) plays its final GWLL game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Air Force Academy (3-8, 1-3).
The 18th-ranked DU women (10-5, 4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), fresh off a 13-9 upset of No. 19 Stanford, play a key MPSF contest at California (9-6, 4-0) on Saturday and at St. Mary’s (2-13, 0-4) on Sunday.
The Mammoth (9-6) had its game at San Jose moved to Saturday because of the NHL playoffs. Colorado and the Stealth (8-7) split games this season.
Colorado is riding a two-game win streak after routing cellar-dweller Edmonton by scores of 15-4 and 13-8 last weekend.
Mammoth all-star Dan Carey, still recovering from a concussion, has not played since April 3.
“He’s feeling good, he’s working out and he hasn’t had symptoms in a while,” general manager Steve Govett said. “We’re cautiously optimistic, but we don’t want to put him in harm’s way.”
Jamie Shewchuk has filled Carey’s void with a career-best 24 goals.
Defenseman Jim Moss has recovered from a neck strain and is expected to play, along with defenseman Matt Leveque (back). But speedy transition player Josh Sims (ankle) is doubtful.
Team captain Gavin Prout leads the league with a career-best 65 assists and is ranked second in points with 90. Brian Langtry leads the Mammoth in goals with 28.
The Stealth counter with all-stars Jeff Zywicki and Colin Doyle. Zywicki, the league leader in shooting percentage at .241, ranks third with 45 goals. Doyle has 25 goals and 54 assists.

Sticking it to the system - Former CU club lacrosse player goes pro

While some may think that club teams are less competitive and a step below varsity squads, this is not always the case.

In most colleges, sports are dominated by both varsity and club teams. Unlike varsity sports, in which athletes are given scholarships to be on the team, the athletes in club sports pay to be on the team.

Former Colorado club lacrosse player Patrick Janson, who graduated in 2006, beat out lacrosse players from NCAA teams for a spot on the Colorado Mammoths roster.

Although he was released from the Colorado Mammoth’s roster in March, Janson’s jump from a club sports venue to a professional sports team still remains a feat that few are able to accomplish.

Janson said his success in the sport did not come easily.

“The hardest thing was coming out of college and knowing that there was a lot more work to get done,” Janson said.

Colorado holds Edmonton to only four goals

Rout also secures playoff host role

In a league that seemingly specializes in games decided by one goal, the Colorado Mammoth had a much-needed laugher Friday night.

The Mammoth walloped the visiting Edmonton Rush 15-4 at the Pepsi Center, clinching at least one home playoff game and setting an abundance of team superlatives in the process.

Colorado allowed the fewest goals in its history, trumping the previous best of six. For a while, it appeared Colorado would challenge the overall National Lacrosse League record of two goals allowed, set by the Toronto Rock in the 1999 postseason.

MAMMOTH TO BE HOME FOR PLAYOFF OPENER AFTER ROUTING RUSH

The Colorado Mammoth, which had won all five previous meetings with the Edmonton Rush, took the dominance of its division foe to a higher level on Friday night.

A relentless power play and record-setting defensive performance gave the Mammoth a 15-4 victory in front of a season-high crowd of 18,301 at Pepsi Center.

The victory, by the largest margin of the season, ensures the Mammoth (8-6) will finish no lower than second place in the National Lacrosse League’s West Division. The team will host a West Division Semifinal playoff game, likely to be played on Saturday, May 3.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. “We weren’t happy with our play last weekend and I was happy to see us respond.”

The Mammoth and Rush (4-10) meet again on Saturday at Rexall Place in Edmonton at 7:30 p.m.

Colorado, which entered the game ranked fourth in the league with a 44.4 percent success rate on the power play, converted on 8-of-12 extra man chances.

Meanwhile, goaltender Gee Nash and the Mammoth defense allowed the fewest goals in team history, breaking the previous record of six. Nash finished with 31 saves on 35 shots.

Mammoth captain Gavin Prout had a game-high seven assists, bringing his league-leading total up to 63. He needs eight assists in the last two regular-season games to tie Josh Sanderson’s NLL record of 71, set in 2005 with the Toronto Rock.

Jamie Shewchuk led the Mammoth with four goals and Nick Carlson added three. Brian Langtry scored twice, tying Gary Gait’s Mammoth team record of 149 goals.

Jed Prossner, who also had two goals, scored with a hard shot from a bad angle early in the second quarter to give the Mammoth a 7-1 lead. The shorthanded tally prompted the Rush to replace starting goaltender Curtis Palidwor with backup Matt King. Palidwor stopped 12-of-19 shots and King came in to make 25 saves on 33 shots.

The Mammoth reeled of three power-play goals in a 2:21 span of the second quarter to extend the dominance to 10-1. Carlson then scored his second goal of the night to give Colorado an 11-1 halftime lead, marking the first time in team history the Mammoth has allowed only one goal in a half.

The Mammoth went 3-for-3 on the power play in the first quarter, helping to build a 6-1 lead early in the game.

Injuries piling up
Already missing Dan Carey (concussion) and Jim Moss (shoulder), the Mammoth took another blow Friday when Josh Sims left the game with a sprained ankle. He will not play Saturday night in Edmonton.

newmammoth.gifNEW YORK – The New York Titans opened the second quarter with a five-goal run that proved to be the difference in a 14-10 victory over the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday night.

Mike McLellan scored two of his team-leading four goals during the run, helping the Titans build a 9-4 halftime lead before a crowd of 6,337 at Madison Square Garden.

The Mammoth, which has already clinched a playoff spot in the National Lacrosse League’s West Division, fell to 7-6. The Titans improved to 7-6 and helped their playoff chances in the log jammed East Division race.
