USAFA, Colo. - Air Force lacrosse coach Fred Acee announced his retirement today, effective at the end of the 2009 season, according to an announcement from Deputy Athletic Director and Head of Physical Education at the Academy, Col. Billy Walker. Acee will remain in the program this season in an administrative role. Current assistant coach Eric Seremet has been named interim head coach for this season.
Acee, who has been coaching collegiate lacrosse for more than 40 years and holds a career record of 350-223-1, spent 11 seasons at the helm of the Air Force program. Among the highlights during his tenure with the Falcons are an upset victory over ninth-ranked conference foe Notre Dame in 2006 and a historic win against defending national champion Virginia to open the 2004 season. The victory over the Cavaliers marked the first time the Falcons had knocked off a top-ranked team.
“Coach Acee has transformed the Air Force lacrosse program in his 11 years at the Academy,” Walker said. “He has strengthened our schedule every year, been a leader in the sport nationally, was influential in the development of two different conferences and has been a superb role model and mentor to our cadets. This is something Fred felt was in the best interest of his health and family at this point in his life and we respect his decision. I can’t tell you how much I’ll miss him. He put Air Force lacrosse on the map, and for that he’ll always have our respect.”
Prior to his arrival at the Academy, Acee, a 1963 graduate of Cortland State, spent 30 years as the lacrosse coach at SUNY-Farmingdale, leading the Rams to three NJCAA championships and 25 Final Fours. Acee was also named the NJCAA Coach of the Year on four occasions (1977, 1981, 1987 and 1997).
Over the past four-plus decades, Acee has racked up numerous accolades, including inductions into the Long Island Metropolitan Hall of Fame and the Junior College Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He served as the defensive coach for the U.S. lacrosse team which won a world championship in 1994 and was also the head coach for the South team at the North/South All-Star Game in 2002. Acee was honored as the Howdy Myers Man of the Year by the USILA in 2001, and in 2007, he was recipient of both the USILA’s Frenchy Julien Service Award and the IMLCA Creators Award.
Seremet has been an assistant coach at the Academy for the past seven seasons, working primarily with the offense. His career has also included stints at Dartmouth (1993), Stony Brook (1997-2000) and Cornell (2001).
A 1992 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Seremet was a four-year lacrosse letterwinner for the Tar Heels. He was a starter on the 1991 national championship team and a member of four ACC championship teams (1989-92). In addition, Seremet has several years of professional experience, as an eight-year member of the National Lacrosse League. Seremet began his pro career in 1993 with the Boston Blazers and has also played for the New York Saints, Syracuse Smash and Colorado Mammoth.
The Colorado Mammoth selected forward Matt Danowski from Duke on Sunday with the seventh pick of the first round of the National Lacrosse League entry draft.
Danowski was the 2007 and 2008 U.S. collegiate national player of the year and a four-time All-American.
“Obviously, he’s an accomplished scorer already in the outdoor game, and we think he can become a major offensive force in the NLL,” said Mammoth general manager Steve Govett, who traded two second- round picks in the draft to the Calgary Roughnecks in exchange for the seventh overall pick.
The Mammoth made three other picks Sunday: Duke’s Mike Ward in the third round and Ryan McFadyen in the sixth, and Terry Kiminer of Maryland-Baltimore County in the fourth round.
The Mammoth also reacquired all-star defenseman John Gallant, who had been selected by Boston in the expansion draft in July. The Blazers sent Gallant to Colorado in exchange for transition Jason Bloom and a fifth-round draft pick.
Boulder, CO (Sept. 4, 2008) - The University of Colorado Men’s Lacrosse team ended their first week of tryouts on Thursday, leaving the coaching staff to spend a long night deciding who will continue on for a second week.
The incoming class is composed mainly of recruited and walk-on freshmen, but includes a handful of transfers from excellent lacrosse programs such as Canisius College, University of Denver, St. Johns University (NY), and the former Butler University program. Players buzzed with the excitement of being in a new place and the possibility of representing CU, a premier program.
Nick Kupcewicz comes to Colorado over Bryant College, an NCAA Division 1 lacrosse program in Rhode Island. “There are more kids here, and it’s a great school. Tryouts are going really well so far.”
A common topic of discussion among players was the challenge of playing at altitude. The Colorado campus sits at just over 5,300 feet, and this is a factor that will give the Buffs a fitness advantage over teams outside the Rocky Mountains.
“Yeah, a lot,” Kupcewicz replied when the Atlanta native was asked if he was feeling the thin air.
Watching from the sideline was Ryan Emerson, the freshman brother of CU Captain Mike Emerson. Ryan spent the final two days of tryouts with a bruised knee. While he should be recovered for next week’s tryouts, he has an optimistic outlook for the incoming class. “There are some bigger guys trying out this year, which is always a plus, and I am excited to be playing at the same school as my brother again. But it’s tough not to be out there right now.”
For the record, the brothers from Park City, Utah should have no trouble breathing in Boulder, as their hometown boasts an elevation of 6,980 feet.
Colorado continues its second week of tryouts on Tuesday, September 9th, when invited players will be joined by returning players. The final fall roster will be announced on Friday, September 12th.
Coaching Staff Adds One
David Leach will be making his collegiate debut as an Assistant Coach. He graduated from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado in 2004 as a 3-time all-conference midfielder, and comes to the Buffalo program with 11 years playing and coaching experience.
Leach joins 7th year Head Coach John Galvin, as well as 5th year, recently promoted, Associate Head Coach Peter McGraw and Assistant Coach Patrick Janson.
The Colorado Mammoth acquired the seventh overall pick in Sunday’s National Lacrosse League draft from the Calgary Roughnecks in exchange for the 15th and 20th overall picks.
The Mammoth also signed free-agent forward Gary Rosyski and re-signed forward Dylan Llord.
Rosyski had 18 goals and 22 assist for the San Jose Stealth last season. Llord had three goals and two assists for the Mammoth last year.
