Denver Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Maryland in NCAA First Round, 10-7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 18 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team fell 10-7 to No. 7 and seventh-seeded Maryland in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Maryland (10-5) was led by Grant Catalino, who tallied three goals and two assists in the Terrapin victory.

Junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) each finished with three points on a goal and two assists for the Pioneers, while sophomore Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) tallied two goals.

Denver (10-7) led the Terps 3-2 after one period. The Pioneers received early goals from sophomore John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) and Murray in the first five minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

Maryland came within one before senior Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) extended DU’s lead back to two with 6:18 remaining in the period. The Terps struck again before the period ended.

Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) and Gajic each scored early in the second half to put DU up 5-2. The Terps responded with three man-up goals to tie the score at 5-5 heading into the intermission.

Maryland broke out of the 5-5 tie and took its first lead of the game with 6:14 remaining in the third period. The Terps used goals by Dan Groot and Ryan Young to go ahead 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

Just 1:48 into the fourth, Joe Cinosky moved Maryland’s lead to three with his first goal of the season and the sixth straight by the Terps. Denver fell behind by four 9-5 when Catalino netted his second goal of the game for Maryland just 2:31 later.

Charley Dickenson cut the Terps’ lead to three when he scored on a pass from Murray with 7:32 to play, and Gajic netted his second of the game to move Denver within two with 4:22 remaining. However, Catalino sealed the Maryland victory when he completed his hat trick in the game’s final minute.

Junior goalie Austin Konkel (Aurora, Colo.) made 13 saves for the Pioneers, and Maryland’s Brian Phipps and Jason Carter combined for nine.

With the win, Maryland advances to the NCAA quarterfinals where it will face the winner of the game between UMBC (12-3) and No. 2-seeded Virginia (12-3), which is scheduled for Sunday, May 11 at 5 p.m.

Live stats: www.DenverPioneers.com
Television: ESPNU

Game Overview
Denver is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance and its first since 2006, when it fell to No. 6-seeded Maryland, 16-8. Maryland has made 31 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and has won two titles. The Pioneers (10-6) earned an at-large bid to the 2008 Tournament, despite losing to Ohio State 15-8 in the semifinals of the Great Western Lacrosse League tournament. DU has won seven of its last nine games. The Terps (9-5) were also awarded one of nine at-large bids to the tournament and are coming off of a 16-10 win over Yale on Saturday.

The Series vs. the Terps
This is the fourth meeting between the two clubs and the second in postseason play. Denver trails Maryland 0-3 in the series. The last meeting between the two teams saw the Terrapins defeat the Pioneers 16-8 in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
DU is 0-1 at home against the Terps and 0-2 in College Park, Md.

Rookie Leader
Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) leads the Pioneers with 47 goals and 51 points. The attackman set DU records for goals scored by a freshman and most goals in a season since turning Division I. Lincoln has recorded three or more goals in each of Denver’s last eight games.

The Assist Goes to…
Sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) is the team’s assist leader with 19 assists on the season, part of 27 points on the year. Dickenson had six assists in all of the 2007 season.

National Tournament Experience
Nine current Pioneers have NCAA Tournament experience. When DU faced Maryland in the 2006 Tournament, a trio of current Pioneers tallied points. Junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) had two goals, senior co-captain Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) had a goal and an assist, and junior Brad Richardson (Langley, B.C.) had a goal.

Transfer Contribution
All four transfers in Denver’s 2008 lineup have contributed significantly. Three of the four transfers came to DU as a result of Butler dropping its lacrosse program at the outset of the 2007 season. The former Bulldogs competing for the Pioneers are co-captain Carlos Navarro (Dallas, Texas), Mike Anderson (Louisville, Ky.), and Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.). Denver has also used the services of Dustin Palmer (Centennial, Colo.), who transferred to DU after three years at Syracuse.

Canadian Connection
The Pioneers have four Canadians on their 2008 roster in Cliff Smith, Jamie Lincoln, Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) and Brad Richardson. Assistant coach Matt Brown hails from Burnaby, B.C. as well.

Getting on the Board…Quickly
Senior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) recorded a goal just 13 seconds into DU’s game against Bellarmine, marking the 10th fastest goal scored in NCAA Division I history.

GWLL Honors
Six Pioneers earned GWLL honors, led by Jamie Lincoln, who was named the GWLL Newcomer of the Year. Sophomore defender Dillon Roy (Denver, Colo.), who has 19 caused turnovers and leads the Pioneers with 14 penalties this season, joined Lincoln on the all-GWLL first team. DU’s second leading scorer Cliff Smith earned second-team honors at attack, while Ilija Gajic and Joey Murray earned all-GWLL honors for the second consecutive season, this year the duo was named to the second team at midfield. Freshman Brendan Deblois (Narragansett, R.I.) was also named all-GWLL second team at defense.

Fourth Quarter Magic
Denver has scored 56 goals in the fourth quarter this season, 14 more goals than their next highest period output. DU has allowed just 35 fourth quarter goals.

National Exposure
DU ranks in the top-20 in five of the seven NCAA categories. Denver is ranked in scoring offense (ninth-11.25 goals per game), man-down defense (13th-76.7%), win percentage (17th-62.5%), face-off win percentage (18th-52.4%), and scoring margin (20th-1.25). Five Pioneers are individually ranked in the top-50, with two in the top-10. Jamie Lincoln is fifth in the nation with 2.94 goals per game, and sophomore Ben Wahler (Denver, Colo.) is second with 6.56 ground balls per game.

Game Winners
The Pioneers have received game-winning goals from six different players this season. Cliff Smith leads the team with three, while Charley Dickenson and Ilija Gajic have two apiece. Seniors Brett Koll and Andrew Bourke (Denver, Colo.) each have one.

Overtime Thrillers
DU is 2-0 in overtime games this season after the 10-9 win over Harvard on March 29, when Cliff Smith recorded the game-winner with 1:03 remaining in the overtime period. Brett Koll scored the game-winner against Penn on March 9.

Top-10 Opponents
Denver is 1-2 against top-10 ranked opponents this season, defeating then-No. 7 Notre Dame, and losing to then-No. 9 North Carolina and then-No. 7 Cornell.

DAN CAREY & CHRIS MCELROY RECOGNIZED

West All-Stars honored for Sportsmanship and Community Service

05/05/2008

Colorado’s Dan Carey was named the 2008 Sportsmanship Award winner, while Edmonton’s Chris McElroy won the league’s Community Service Award.

Carey scored 22 goals and 27 assists in 11 games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. The 26-year-old left-hander has played three seasons for the Mammoth since graduating from Canisius College. He won the NLL Championship with the Mammoth in 2006 and appeared in the 2007 and 2008 NLL All-Star Game.

Carey is admired by both teammates and opponents. In 43 career games, Carey has accumulated only 11 penalty minutes, none in 2008. Carey even apologized to Calgary’s Steve Dietrich after he delivered a shot which knocked out the veteran goalkeeper in the season opener.

McElroy has worked tirelessly towards charitable causes and bringing lacrosse to the forefront in the Edmonton area. The Rush’s team captain worked with a number of charities this year, including the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the St. Valentine’s Day Hair Massacre. He also continually promotes the Rush and the sport of lacrosse at every opportunity.

The 25-year-old defender scooped 101 loose balls in 16 games this season. The four-year veteran has been with the Rush since the team’s inception in 2006.

LATE BURST ROLLS ROUGHNECKS PAST MAMMOTH

Like two heavyweights in the ring, the Colorado Mammoth and Calgary Roughnecks exchanged blows for 60 playoff minutes on Saturday night. The Mammoth punched hard, taking a two-goal lead with eight minutes remaining. Then the Roughnecks counterpunched.

In a game that had seven ties and four lead changes, the Roughnecks rode the last swing of momentum to a 15-13 victory in front of a stunned crowd of 15,554 at Pepsi Center.

The victory sends the Roughnecks to the West Division Final next weekend, while the loss ends the Mammoth’s sixth National Lacrosse League season.

Trailing 12-10, Calgary exploded for five goals by five different players late in the game to win the single-elimination playoff game. A Mammoth goal by Nenad Gajic with one second remaining did little to soothe the sting of losing a postseason game on its home floor for the second year in a row.

“We battled hard and put ourselves in a position to win,” said Mammoth coach Bob McMahon, who guided the team to a 9-7 regular-season record in his first year behind the bench. “We just couldn’t close them out when we had the chance.”

Jamie Shewchuk led the Mammoth with seven points on two goals and five assists, stepping up offensively in place of Dan Carey, who missed his sixth consecutive game because of a concussion. Eight others scored goals for the Mammoth, including two each by Jason Wulder, Chris Gill and Gavin Prout.

Jeff Shattler and Kaleb Toth each scored three goals for the Roughnecks while Tracey Kelusky added two goals and five assists.

Gee Nash took the loss in goal for the Mammoth, stopping 37-of-51 shots. The Roughnecks last goal was scored on an empty net. Steve Dietrich earned the victory in goal for Calgary, making 29 saves on 42 shots.

Shattler scored early in the third quarter to give Calgary a 7-5 lead, but the Mammoth responded to tie the game on two blistering outside shots by Prout. Jordan Cornfield then scored with a perfect shot over Dietrich’s shoulder to give the Mammoth an 8-7 lead.

After a three-goal run by the Roughnecks tied the score at 4-4, Shewchuk scored to end a 13-minute goalless drought for the Mammoth. The 5-4 lead lasted less than two minutes though, and the Roughnecks scored twice to take a 6-5 halftime lead.

The Mammoth scored four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.

FAMILIAR FOES MATCHED UP ONCE AGAIN IN PLAYOFFS

The premier West Division rivalry is renewed in the playoffs for the third time on Saturday when the Colorado Mammoth hosts the Calgary Roughnecks at 7 p.m.

The teams have met twice before in the National Lacrosse League postseason – both games were at Pepsi Center – and each time the victor continued on to win the league championship.

The Mammoth won two of three games against the Roughnecks this season, including a 10-9 victory on Opening Night.

“It’s been a real good rivalry over the last four years,” Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. “We had three close, hard-fought games against (Calgary) this season and we’re anticipating a fourth.”

Roughnecks rallying
After a midseason slump had Calgary moving out of the playoff picture at 4-9, the team came together to win its last three games and grab third place in the division.

“We’ve started to play better of late,” Roughnecks general manager Kurt Silcott said. “We have a lot of leaders on this team and a lot of guys with character.”

One leader that has made a late-season impact is Josh Sanderson, acquired from Toronto at the trading deadline. Sanderson has tallied six goals and eight assists in four games since joining the Roughnecks, including four points on the power play.

He’s a quarterback, a feeder, and he sees the floor well,” Silcott said. “He’s a very knowledgeable lacrosse player. Our power plays have been better with Josh out there.”

“Underdog” Mammoth braces for playoff battle

Two years removed from the National Lacrosse League championship, the Colorado Mammoth enters Saturday’s playoff opener against Calgary in the odd position of underdog.
The label fits, even though Colorado is playing at the 18,007-seat Pepsi Center, in front of the NLL’s largest fan base, and has the higher seed: No. 2. The Mammoth is coming off an 11-6 loss at San Jose in which it was outscored 4-0 in the fourth quarter.
“We’re clearly the underdog. We’re slumping, if you will, and they are surging,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said of a Roughnecks team that is at nearly full strength after an injury-riddled stretch.

Pair of Falcons Earn All-GWLL Accolades

USAFA, Colo. - A pair of Air Force players were honored as members of the Great Western Lacrosse League’s 2008 all-league team. Juniors Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) and Dan Gnazzo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each earned first-team All-GWLL honors. Ohio State led the way with eight all-conference selections, including four on the first team. Notre Dame (four first-team picks) and Denver (two first-team selections) each added six all-league honorees. Air Force placed two players on the all-conference squad, while Quinnipiac and Bellarmine each had one second-team selection.
Nevitt receives the third all-conference honors of his career, earning second-team recognition at midfield in 2006 and first-team accolades in 2007. This season, Nevitt led the Falcons with 24 points on the year, recording a team-best 18 goals and six assists. The team’s leading scorer for the second-straight season and the leading goal scorer for the third straight season, Nevitt has tallied at least one goal or assist in 38 out of 40 games in his career. He was also named to the Pioneer Face-Off Classic team for the third-consecutive season and was one of two Falcons to score a man-down goal this year. In addition, Nevitt finished the season ranked second on the team with 45 ground balls.
Gnazzo, a three-year starter at the long-stick midfield position, receives the second all-conference recognition of his career after being named a second-team selection in 2007. This year, Gnazzo led the Falcons with 64 ground balls, ranking among the top 10 in the nation in that category with 5.33 per game, while also registering 23 caused turnovers on the season. Named to the all-tournament team at the Pioneer Face-Off Classic for a third straight year, Gnazzo also gave the team an offensive boost, scoring his first career goal against Brown before finishing the year with three goals and four assists.
In addition to announcing the all-league first and second teams, the GWLL’s individual awards (Newcomer of the Year, Player of the Year and Coach of the Year) were released Thursday as well. Player of the Year honors went to Ohio State’s Kevin Buchanan, a senior attack who led the league in scoring with 63 points (second in the NCAA). The conference’s Newcomer of the Year award went to the Denver attackman Jamie Lincoln, the leading freshman scorer in the nation. Meanwhile, Quinnipiac’s Eric Fekete was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to an 8-4 overall record and berth in the first GWLL Tournament.

DU to Face Ohio State on Friday

Friday, May 2, 2008
No. 19 Denver vs. No. 10 Ohio State, 5:30 p.m. MT
Seaholm High School Birmingham, Mich.

Game Overview
Denver earned the No. 2 in the GWLL Tournament and Ohio State received the No. 3 after the two teams split the GWLL regular season title three ways with Notre Dame. The winner of the DU-OSU semifinal will face the winner of the Notre Dame and Quinnipiac semifinal game, which will be played at 3 p.m. MT.

The Series vs. the Buckeyes
This is the 14th meeting between the two clubs and the first in postseason play. The Pioneers trail Ohio State 4-9 in the series. DU is 4-2 at home, and 0-7 in Columbus, but the two teams have never met on a neutral field. The two teams met two weeks ago with OSU winning 20-13 in front of an NCAA regular season record crowd of 29,601.

GWLL Newcomer of the Year
Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) was named the GWLL Newcomer of the Year. The attackman earned first team honors with his record-setting rookie campaign of 44 goals and 48 points. Lincoln has already set the DU Division I record for goals in a season.

GWLL Honors
Joining Lincoln on the first team was sophomore defender Dillon Roy (Denver, Colo.), who has 19 caused turnovers and leads the Pioneers with 14 penalties this season. Junior Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.) earned second-team honors at attack and is Denver’s second leading scorer with 24 goals and 35 points. Sophomore Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) and junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) earned all-GWLL honors for the second consecutive season, this year earning second team honors at midfield. Freshman Brendan Deblois (Narragansett, R.I.) was also named all-GWLL second team at defense.

Fourth Quarter Magic
Denver has scored 52 goals in the fourth quarter this season, 10 more goals than their next highest output at 42 in the third period. DU has allowed just 33 fourth quarter goals.

National Exposure
The Pioneers are ranked in the top-20 in five in seven of the NCAA categories. Denver is eighth in scoring offense, averaging 11.47 goals per game, win percentage (11th-66.7%), man-down defense (13th-76.7%), scoring margin (16th-1.8), and man-up offense (18-34.1%).

Individually, four pioneers are ranked in the top-50, led by Lincoln, who is fifth in the nation in goals per game (2.93) and 26th in points per game (3.20). Sophomore Ben Wahler (Denver, Colo.) ranks second nationally in ground balls per game (6.47) and 27th in face-off win percentage (53.2%). Junior Austin Konkel (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) rank among the top-50, as well.

Game Winners
The Pioneers have gotten game-winning goals from six different players this season. Smith leads the team with three, while Charley Dickenson and Gajic have two apiece. Seniors Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Andrew Bourke (Denver, Colo.) each have one.

The Assist Goes to
Charley Dickenson is the team leader with 18 assists on the season, part of 25 points on the year. Dickenson had six assists in all of 2007. An additional trio of Pioneers have reached double figures in assists this year in Gajic (12), Murray (11) and Smith (11).

Overtime Thrillers
DU is 2-0 in overtime games this season after the 10-9 win over Harvard on March 29, when Smith recorded the game-winner with 1:03 remaining in the overtime period. Koll scored the game-winner against Penn on March 9.

Ranked Opponents
Denver is 2-4 against ranked opponents this season, defeating then-No. 16 Colgate and then-No. 7 Notre Dame, and losing to then-No. 9 North Carolina, then-No. 20 Towson, then-No. 7 Cornell and then-No. 11 Ohio State.

Lincoln Leads DU GWLL Honors - Freshman named Newcomer of the Year

DENVER – Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) was named the Great Western Lacrosse League Newcomer of the Year and six members of the No. 19 GWLL co-champions University of Denver men’s lacrosse team earned All-Conference first and second team honors, the league announced today.

Lincoln earned first team honors with his record-setting rookie campaign of 44 goals and 48 points. Lincoln set the DU Division I record for goals in a season.

Joining Lincoln on the first team was sophomore Dillon Roy (Denver, Colo.) at defense. Roy has 19 caused turnovers on the season and leads the Pioneer.

Junior Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.), the Pioneers second leading scorer with 24 goals and 35 points, earned second team honors at attack. Sophomore Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) and Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) earned all-GWLL honors for the second consecutive season, both being named to the second team at midfield. Gajic has 12 goals and 12 assists on the season, while Murray has 13 goals and 11 assists. Freshman Brendon Deblois (Narragansett, R.I.) was named all-GWLL second team defense.

Ohio State’s Kevin Buchanan was named the GWLL Player of the Year, while Quinnipiac head coach Eric Fekete was named the GWLL Coach of the Year. The Buckeyes placed eight players on the all-conference first and second teams, while GWLL co-champion Notre Dame had six players earn postseason conference honors.

DU, who split the GWLL regular season title with OSU and Notre Dame, will play No. 10 Ohio State at Seaholm High School stadium in Birmingham, Mich., in the semifinals of the GWLL Tournament on Friday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. MT.

Rookie of the Week: Jamie Lincoln, Denver

Amazing that this first year midfielder has not received this honor before. The St. Cathariens, Ontario native has taken the Great Western Lacrosse League by storm. On Saturday, he lit Air Force up for five goals, extending his Denver single season goal record to 44. Granted, Lincoln had extensive lacrosse experience prior to arriving at Denver (Minto Cup in Canada and is currently 21 years of age). However, scoring that many goals from the midfield while attracting long pole attention from the opposition since the early stages of the season is an insane feat for even a senior. Lincoln has a tremendous knack for scoring and is a tough player who is willing to sell-out to find the back of the net. Lincoln is certainly worthy of All-American this season.

STEALTH STIFLES MAMMOTH’S BID FOR DIVISION TITLE

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Colorado Mammoth fell behind early in Saturday’s game, allowing five goals on the San Jose Stealth’s first six shots, and then battled back to within one, only to be shut out in the fourth quarter and lose.

Despite putting 15 more shots on goal than the Stealth, the Mammoth was stifled offensively in an 11-6 loss at the HP Pavilion. Both teams finished the National Lacrosse League regular season with 9-7 records, but the Stealth claimed the West Division title with the victory, by virtue of its 2-1 mark against the Mammoth this year.

As the second-place team, the Mammoth will host the third-place Calgary Roughnecks (7-9) in a West Division Semifinal playoff game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at Pepsi Center. San Jose will host the fourth-place Portland LumberJax (6-10) in the other semifinal.

After allowing five Stealth goals on six shots, Mammoth goaltender Gee Nash was replaced in favor of Chris Levis, who came on to stop 27-of-33 shots.

The Mammoth, trailing 5-2 after the first quarter, cut San Jose’s leads to 6-4 at halftime and 7-6 after three quarters. But the Stealth got goals from Colin Doyle, Cam Sedgwick, Gary Rosyski and Jeff Zywicki, and goaltender Anthony Cosmo stopped all eight shots he faced in the fourth quarter. Cosmo, who stopped 16-of-18 in the third quarter, finished with 48 saves on 54 shots.

Brian Langtry and Jamie Shewchuk both tallied two goals and two assists, leading the Mammoth with four points each. Captain Gavin Prout had two assists to finish the season with 67, tops in the NLL and just four shy of the league record.

Zywicki led the Stealth with three goals and Colin Doyle led all scorers with nine points on two goals and a game-high seven assists.
