Denver Ranked Among Inside Lacrosse’s Top-10

DENVER – The University of Denver grabbed the 10th spot on Inside Lacrosse’s Top-10 Men’s Recruiting Class Rankings released this week. The Pioneers’ incoming class placed Denver just behind Albany, whose top freshmen hail from the New York area.

Topping the list is Princeton and rounding out the top-5 are Virginia, defending National Champions Maryland, Syracuse and Penn State.

Following closely behind are North Carolina, Georgetown and Navy. Johns Hopkins, a nine-time NCAA Division I Lacrosse Champion, was added to the Honorable Mention list along with Ohio State, Notre Dame, Harvard, Rutgers and Towson.

Last season, the Pioneers capped-off one of the program’s most successful seasons by earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, finishing the season with a 10-7 overall mark.

In Great Western Lacrosse League play, the Pioneers went 4-1 and shared the regular season title with Notre Dame and Ohio State. The team also earned the No. 2 seed in the inaugural GWLL Tournament.

New ECAC, Big East conferences change the lacrosse landscape

Within the last two months, the Big East started a lacrosse conference and the East Coast Athletic Conference expanded into the Midwest where the Great Western Lacrosse League once stood. The GWLL is dust in the winds of change. Before we get to my take on the big changes to the college lacrosse configuration, here’s how the new conferences will look in 2010.

The seven schools that will participate in the newly formed Big East Conference are Georgetown, Notre Dame, Providence, Rutgers, St. John’s, Syracuse and Villanova. The teams will play each other once in the regular season. The conference hopes to receive an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA tournament field.

The new ECAC Lacrosse League will include former GWLL members Air Force, Bellarmine, Denver, Ohio State and Quinnipiac and existing ECAC schools Fairfield, Hobart and Loyola. The conference already has an automatic bid.

ECAC LACROSSE LEAGUE ADDS FIVE NEW MEMBERS FOR 2010

CAPE COD, Mass. — ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling is pleased to announce the addition of five new members to the ECAC Lacrosse League. Air Force, Bellarmine, Denver, Ohio State and Quinnipiac will join existing members Fairfield, Hobart and Loyola to form one of the top lacrosse conferences in the country for the 2009-2010 season.

“The lacrosse world is going through a metamorphosis and the ECAC Lacrosse League has emerged stronger than ever,” said Keeling. “The combination of the teams from the ECAC and the Great Western Lacrosse League will make us one of the power lacrosse conferences in the country.”

Three of the eight teams in the newly constituted league qualified for the NCAA tournament last season: Denver, Loyola and Ohio State. Each of those teams had an RPI in the Top 25 in the final national rankings. Six of the eight teams in the new ECAC had .500 or better records last season.

“Overall, we feel it is going to continue to be a highly competitive league and we are excited for 2010,” said Keeling. “The game of lacrosse is growing rapidly across the nation, and we are excited to bring some of the western teams into the East and for those eastern teams to have a chance to play out West. It will only accelerate the growth of the sport across the country.”

In its nine-year history, the ECAC Lacrosse League has enjoyed tremendous success. League members have earned 19 NCAA Tournament bids, and more than two thirds (68%) of those berths have been at-large selections. An ECAC team has advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in seven of the league’s nine years, and in six of the last seven seasons. In 2003, the ECAC had four teams qualify for the NCAA tournament, a quarter of the 16-team field.
