OUTLAWS LOSE TO SECOND PLACE CANNONS 17-16

On a partly cloudy 4th of July night in Denver, the Outlaws took on the Boston Cannons at INVESCO Field at Mile High for the first time ever. The rain cleared up just before the game started which allowed a MLL record of 21,952 fans to attend tonight’s game. The game went back and forth the entire contest, with the Boston Cannons coming out on top 17-16 in a high scoring battle that caused the Outlaws to lose their first game since the season opening game against Chicago.

The boys in Orange and Black came out in the first quarter looking to pull ahead early against Boston. Brian Langtry (Hofstra) scored early for Denver at 3:19 followed by two more goals by the Outlaws before the Cannons had a goal. Soon after Boston had their first goal at 8:59 by Kyle Sweeney, and Paul Rabil tied up the game at three at 4:26. Drew Westervelt (UMBC) scored his second of the game at 2:13 on a nice feed from Dan Hardy (Syracuse). Soon after the goal, the Cannons tied the game back up at four to end the quarter.

At the half, the Outlaws were trailing for the first time since they played Washington on May 30, 2009. The Cannons outscored Denver in the second three to one and ended the half winning seven to five. The Cannons scored at 4:49 from Ryan Boyle and Sean Morris, followed by Langtry’s second of the game from Josh Sims (Princeton) at 7:41. Following Langtry’s goal, Boston scored twice in just over a minute to end the half.

In the third, scoring once again went back and forth between the two teams. Sims scored early for the Outlaws at 0:25. Denver outscored Boston eight goals to six as both Langtry and Westervelt scored hat-tricks. Matt Brown (Denver), last week’s Offensive Player of the Week scored his second of the game at 11:39 to help the Outlaws tie the game at the end of three. Also at the end of the quarter, Denver was 50% on the Power Play as Boston was zero for four.

Boston came out in the forth and outscored the Outlaws four to three and the one goal advantage was enough for the Cannons to take away Denver’s winning streak. Ryan Boyle was the Bud Light MVP chosen by ESPN. The player of the game for the Outlaws was Westervelt, scoring a total of six goals (one 2pt goal) and had one assist for a total of eight points in the game. He scored a sock trick (six goals) at 8:28 as pairs of socks flew all over INVESCO.
