2009 GAME NOTES - SATURDAY, JULY 4th, 2009 Denver Outlaws (6-1) vs. Boston Cannon (4-3)

7:00 P.M. MT Face-Off at INVESCO FIELD

Outlaws vs. Cannon Preview

The fireworks at INVESCO on Saturday could celebrate two things—the obvious being the Fourth of July but also noteworthy is the fact that the Outlaws have a 1.5 game lead in the Major League Lacrosse standings with a 6-1 record.

Boston will look to end Denver’s impressive 6-game win streak by extending their 3-game tear. Both teams are also coming off victories against Toronto.

In the first match-up this season the Outlaws were able to narrowly take down the Cannons 15-14 at Harvard Stadium. With 21 seconds left in the game Outlaws goalie Jesse Schwartzman made a huge save that sealed the win.

If the Outlaws want to enjoy the fireworks following the game face-offs will certainly dictate that. Chris Eck, one of the games’ best ‘x’ specialists went 24-for-32 last time for Boston.

Stars to Watch

Matt Brown (Denver) - Coming off his best performance of the year (6 goals, 1 assist) Brown should have the confidence to attack the Boston pipes. He also netted a hat trick the first time around which means he could spell trouble for the Cannons.

Sean Morris (Boston) - He’s the perfect offensive threat because Morris is able to score and find the open shooter. His 14 goals and 14 assists are good for third in the league in points. At 5’9” he certainly sneaks up on a team.

Paul Rabil (Boston) - Unlike teammate Morris, Rabil is a big (6’3”, 220 pounds) scoring threat from the midfield position. His three 2-point goals match his total from the 2008 season.

Jesse Schwartzman (Denver) - With two ‘Defensive Player of the Week’ awards to his credit its hard not to keep an eye on him. Schwartzman plays more minutes than any other goalie and has the most saves (90) and best goals against average (11.42 GAA).

Individual Match-up

Brendan Mundorf vs. Mike Levin

The MLL’s leading scorer will go head on against the second best goalie. Levin ranks behind only Schwartzman in goals against average (11.74) and saves (88). Mundorf, like many of his teammates, has been very success offensively of late. He has 8 goals and 2 assists in the last two games. Oh yeah, he also scored 5 and assisted on another against the Cannons in May.

Outlaws Ranked No.1 in MLL

The Denver Outlaws (6-1) secured their spot at the top of the MLL with their win over the Toronto Nationals (4-4). After a disappointing season-opening loss to Chicago (1-6), The Outlaws have bounced back to win six straight. Led by the outstanding play of Jesse Schwartzman, voted Defensive Player of the Week two times this season, and Brendan Mundorf, the MLL’s leading scorer, the boys from Denver are firing on all cylinders. It seems that the Outlaws will be heading to the playoffs, but a tough schedule lies ahead. Two meetings with both Long Island and Toronto, and a July 4 matchup with Boston are all games that cannot be overlooked, but right now, the energized Denver squad looks ready to take on any team in the league.
