Denver Men’s Lacrosse to Visit Stedman Elementary Oct. 3

The Pioneers will visit the local elementary school as part of the Denver CityLax program

DENVER – The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team will visit Stedman Elementary this Friday as part of their commitment to the community. The Pioneers will partner with Denver City Lax, a Colorado non-profit organization that provides an athletic-based educational program to underserved inner-city neighborhoods in the Denver metro area.

“I think taking part in Denver City Lax is an outstanding opportunity for the men’s lacrosse team to get active in our community and make a difference,” said head coach Jamie Munro. “The program provides a positive educational influence for children, while at the same time getting them active in the sport of lacrosse.”

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and will start with members of the DU men’s lacrosse team discussing the history of the game. After a brief demonstration of the rules and how to use the equipment, the students will be divided into small groups to work with the Pioneers on different techniques of the game.

City Lax is dedicated to creating opportunities for inner-city youth by introducing them to lacrosse, a sport that offers lessons on the field, in the classroom and in life. The sport of lacrosse provides a framework through which young players can learn important lessons about character, including honesty, kindness, courage, equality and respect.

In addition, the educational opportunities associated with lacrosse are numerous. City Lax’s mission is to provide opportunity and build character in our youth so they can become the community leaders of tomorrow.

The primary goal of Denver City Lax is to introduce the sport to the large segment of central Denver that is not aware of its educational and athletic benefits, despite lacrosse’s rapidly growing popularity in other areas of the state.

Like other character education sports programs, Denver City Lax intends to be a program that promotes ethical values, challenges its students and players, fosters self-motivation and engages its members to become future leaders.

A key part of City Lax’s success is recruiting local high school and college students to help its youth with athletics, homework, math, reading and writing while they enhance their own skills and talents through the experience of helping others.
