DENVER, CO – Saturday, May 31, 2008 – On a beautiful Saturday night in the Mile High City, Ryan Powell made his debut in front of 8,127 at INVESCO Field at Mile High. With 5 points for the night, Powell earned the Bud Light MVP award. The Denver Outlaws beat the New Jersey Pride 19-11.
The second meeting for these two teams started off with a bang. Pride midfielder Daniel Chemotti scored within the first 90 seconds, but Denver’s Matt Hanna was quick to respond with a goal assisted by Powell. With two more goals by the Outlaws, New Jersey’s Kevin Boland got the last goal of the quarter on a power play, making it only a 3-2 lead by the Outlaws.
Starting off the second quarter, Brendan Mundorf scored for Denver unassisted at 1:26. In his 87th game, putting him at the top of the MLL record for games played, attackman Scott Urick got his only goal for the night, due to the fact that he was injured later in the quarter. Nate Watkins got his first goal as an Outlaw with an assist by Powell. Now with Urick out, Merrick Thomson scored for the Pride on another power play. The Outlaws’ top scorer Matt Brown made it 6-4 with an assist by Tom Ethington to finish out the half.
After being held to only one assist in the first half, Powell scored an unassisted goal in the second half. His goal started an unanswered 8 point run by the Outlaws. During that run, Brian Langtry got one goal and one 2-point goal, Drew Westervelt scored, Geoff Snider had two goals, and Jeff Sonke had his first goal of the game. At 12:57, Thomson ended Denver’s run, which was followed by another goal by attackman Chris Unterstein.
In a hat trick performance, Thomson opened up the last quarter with a goal. Playing the midfield position, Drew Westervelt scored from a pass by Powell. That assist tied Powell in second with his brother Casey for career assists. With 4:42 left in the game, Greg Peyser of the Pride got a goal, making the score 17-10. Rob Parengkuan had the last goal for New Jersey, and Jeff Sonke scored Denver’s last two finishing out the game.
New Jersey’s goalie, Rob Scherr had 20 saves for the night while Outlaw Jesse Schwartzman recorded 17.
The Outlaws will be back at home on June 14 playing San Francisco.

Attackman Ryan Powell finished with a co-game-high five points on two goals and three assists to lead the Denver Outlaws to a 19-11 victory over the New Jersey Pride before a crowd of 8,127 Saturday night at Invesco Field.
Brian Langtry added four points on two goals, including one two-point goal, and one assist, and Drew Westervelt, Jeff Sonke and Matt Brown all contributed three points for the Outlaws (2-1), which bounced back from last week’s loss to Washington. Westervelt and Sonke each scored three goals, and Brown had two goals and an assist for Denver.
Brendan Mundorf and Geoff Snider each pitched in with a pair of goals for the Outlaws.
In a losing effort, Merrick Thompson scored four goals and dished an assist for New Jersey (0-2), which lost its second straight to start the season.
Denver led 5-4 late in the first half when it scored eight consecutive goals, including a two-point goal, to put the game away. Brown started the run by giving the Outlaws a 6-4 lead when he scored with 2:24 remaining in the first half.
Langtry opened the second half by scoring the game’s only two-point goal to put Denver ahead 8-4. By the time Langtry scored with 3:38 to play in the first half, Denver led 14-4.
The two-time Major League Lacrosse MVP felt like a 10-year-old boy changing schools, yet played like a cunning veteran.
Ryan Powell shook off the “new boy” label, scoring two goals and making three assists in the Denver Outlaws’ 19-11 pounding of the New Jersey Pride on Saturday night at Invesco Field at Mile High.
“I had jitters. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but everything was cool. They welcomed me with open arms,” said Powell, who was acquired along with Nate Watkins in an offseason trade with San Francisco.
Powell’s debut with Denver (2-1) was delayed one week by his participation in the indoor pro championships and another week by fatigue.
He made his first mark with a pass to Matt Hanna to tie it 1-1, then set up Watkins early in the second quarter. New Jersey (0-2) answered with its second power-play goal of the half, and after Matt Brown’s high shot from the slot, Denver led 6-4 at halftime.
Following a passionate speech by coach Brian Reese, the Outlaws outscored the Pride 8-2 in the third quarter.
Geoff Snider dominated faceoffs, including an astounding 3-minute, 18-second span in which Denver scored six consecutive goals.
“Last week I was a little unprepared, maybe a little cocky,” Snider admitted. “I think I let the guys down. It was important tonight not to do that, and with Ryan Powell, Matt Brown and Brendan Mundorf on attack, it makes my job a little easier. It was a total team effort.”
Powell backed down Damien Davis and then shot from a difficult angle for his first goal in an Outlaws uniform.
Brian Langtry, ranked second in MLL in points, followed with a low laser shot from beyond the 2-point line.
After Drew Westervelt’s scoop shot, Snider scored two of the next three.
“When you have guys like Powell, Brown and Mundorf, defenders might hesitate to slide over to me,” Snider said. “I just have to bury my chances.”
