In their second game of the season, the Outlaws dropped a close one to the Washington Bayhawks. Comebacks have been a major part of the first two weeks this season in Major League Lacrosse. Saturday night’s game between the Denver Outlaws and Washington Bayhawks was no different.
After falling behind in the third quarter, the Bayhawks rallied with five goals in the fourth quarter to earn their first victory of the season, a 17-16 victory over the Outlaws at George Mason Stadium. Andrew “Buggs” Combs led Washington with a career-high six goals in the victory.
The Outlaws took a 1-0 lead when Greg Bastis scored off a feed from Brendan Mundorf with 11:00 left in the first quarter. But, the Bayhawks took control of the first quarter from there, scoring seven goals, including a two-point marker from Kyle Dixon, to take an 8-1 advantage. Combs scored three goals during the run.
While the Bayhawks jumped out to the seven-goal advantage, the Outlaws were not phased and put together a six-point run of their own to close within 8-7 with 7:00 left in the second quarter. Five different players scored a goal during the run, including a two-pointer from Matt Hanna.
Washington scored two of the final three goals to end the first half with a 10-8 lead.
After the teams traded goals twice to start the third quarter, the Outlaws took a 13-12 lead by scoring three straight goals in the final 1:07 of the period, including a pair of markers from Matt Brown.
Trailing by the one-point margin, the Bayhawks put together a five-goal rally to regain the advantage at 17-13 with 3:50 remaining. Bill McGlone scored two goals to ignite the run for the Bayhawks, who were making their seasonal home debut.
Brown tallied his fourth goal of the game with 3:02 remaining to start a three-goal spurt, pulling Denver to within 17-16 with 1:31 left. Brown also added a goal to go with a marker from Westervelt. However, the Outlaws were unable to score the tying goal and the Bayhawks snapped a five-game losing streak, dating back to last season.
While Combs led the Bayhawks with six goals, McGlone, Dixon and Matt Ward each added two goals in the victory. Brendan Healy also scored two goals with two assists.
Brown led Denver with five goals in a losing effort.
