It took overtime, but the Fort Collins Unified high school lacrosse reaffirmed Friday night why its regarded my most as the top team in Colorado.
Brock Waddell scored a goal with 1 minute, 23 seconds left in overtime to lift the Vipers to a thrilling 7-6 win over Regis in a battle of Colorado-lacrosse titans at French Field.

“It was definitely a good win for us,” Vipers coach Carey Smith said. “It was a little sloppy, but we really played hard and showed a lot of heart. These kids just don’t like losing.”
The contest seemed destined to go to overtime from the start. The two squads were tied 2-2 after the first quarter, 3-3 after the second, 4-4 after the third and 6-6 at the end of regulation.
Smith praised the play of midfielder Greg Rushing, who won 13 of 17 faceoffs and scored a goal, and of goalie Jackson Nye, who made 13 saves - not one of them bigger than his last one of the night that set up the winning goal.
Devin Arruabarrena scored two goals for the defending state-champion Vipers.
