Seldom will a 9-3 defeat bring such a smile to a coach’s face.
But for the young Pueblo West High School girls lacrosse program, Friday’s showing against Cherry Creek was cause for optimism.
Cherry Creek is one of the top lacrosse programs in the state, with a well-developed feeder program. Pueblo West’s team is in just its third year of existence, and won just one game last season.
But last Friday on a wind-whipped field at Pueblo West, the Cyclones stood up to Cherry Creek - at least for a while.
After falling behind 4-0 in just nine minutes of play, the Cyclones started generating some pressure on the Cherry Creek net. And with 10:40 left in the first half, West’s Morgan Devendorf made a nice move from behind the goal to score and get West into the game.
Just 92 seconds later, Devendorf was at it again - scoring on a free chance in front of the net after a Cherry Creek foul.
West trailed just 4-2 after 16 minutes of play.
