Tigers know what to expect as CHSAA members - SHS boys lax team prepares for tough competition

FARMER’S KORNER - Last spring was a humbling season for the Summit High School boys lacrosse team.

The Tigers, once known for their mountain-region dominance as a club, debuted as a state-sanctioned high school squad and wound up with a 3-9 record.

The losing season was something of an eye-opener for SHS head coach Jay Beckerman.

“(The ‘07 campaign) was a shock,” Beckerman said after Friday’s practice in reference to. “We went 24-2 or 26-2 playing mountain schools like Durango, Battle Mountain and Aspen. We figured (Colorado High School Activities Association) competition would be a little tougher, but that we could go .500 and maybe make the playoffs. … The competition was incredible. It’s nice to have gone through that and know what we’re up against (in the future) instead of going in blind.”

No. 20 Denver Pioneers Battle Past Marist for Win

DENVER – Junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) continued her monster week with six points off two goals and four assists, as the No. 20 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team battled past Marist 21-10 at Barton Stadium on Monday afternoon. Coyne has recorded 25 points in the last three games and now sits just three assists away from tying Kristie Leggio (2006-07) for DU’s career assist record.

Denver (5-3) scored the first two goals, both by freshman Tulley Stapp (Denver, Colo.) from passes by Coyne, but Marist (2-1) hung in there for the first 20 minutes, tying the game 6-6 with 10:11 left in the first half. However, the Pioneers ripped off a 6-1 run to end the half, heading into the lockerroom with a 12-7 halftime lead.

The Red Foxes struck first after the break, but Denver scored eight unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Junior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) added five points each in the Pioneers’ win. Carver had two goals and three assists, while Flury scored four goals and added an assist.

City Lax encourages inner city kids to pick up the game of lacrosse.

DENVER - — In Denver’s Park Hill, nearly a hundred Black, Hispanic and white youngsters have begun practice for season number two on the lacrosse field.

Traditionally a sport played by suburban or private schools, several coaches/teachers at Hallet Academy introduced kids to the sport last year. With a beginners team of fifth graders last year the kids learned the game well enough to win the State Jamboree.

“Our stick skills left something to be desired, but our speed on the field and athletic ability helped us win some games,” said Head Coach Rod Allison. “Last year we had about 15 or 20 kids, this year we have almost 70 enough for about three teams.”

Skills are improving and so is the coaching. “We have support from D.U., the Colorado Mammoth and Outlaws and many of the lacrosse sporting goods stores are helping with equipment,” Allison said.

Practices are held at Smiley and Martin Luther King Park.

Denver lacrosse player has unique offseason conditioning program

Lacrosse is easy for Andrew Bourke these days. Diminutive in stature, the 5-foot-7, 165-pound senior never had it easy on the lacrosse field — until recently. Constantly battling with Division I college players much taller or heavier than him, Bourke has earned every minute of playing time he gets as a reserve attackman for No. 16 Denver, a program he grew up idolizing as a Denver resident. But after working the past three summers as a deckhand on a deep-sea fishing boat off the coast of Alaska, lacrosse now seems like a walk in the park to Bourke.

Hurley tallied his sixth and final goal of the evening, scoring a man-up tally off a pass from Mike Corbolotti.

Neither team scored the rest of the way as Cornell took the 20-7 victory.
