DALLAS – Building off of the excitement generated in last season by the first ever NCAA Division I Men’s lacrosse game played in Dallas, Texas, college lacrosse will return to the area when No. 7 Cornell University takes on Denver on Tuesday, March 18 at Highlander Stadium at Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas. The game will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs and face-off is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
“We’re thrilled to be playing in Dallas this spring,” said Cornell head coach Jeff Tambroni. “It gives us a unique opportunity to play in front of fans and alumni who otherwise would not get the chance to see us play this season. Texas is a state where the sport of lacrosse has gained tremendous momentum and popularity over the past few years and we’re happy to be a part of that.”
Cornell, currently ranked No. 7 in the Inside Lacrosse poll, is 3-1 after a 14-3 drumming of Canicius last Wednesday. Chris Finn and Ryan Hurley both recorded hat tricks in the Big Red win. Both Hurley and Finn lead Cornell with eight goals apiece this season while John Glynn has a team-high seven assists.
Denver enters the week with a 3-3 record after returning to .500 on a late fourth quarter hat trick by junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) and a game-winning goal in overtime by senior Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) to beat Penn, 12-11. DU is riding its longest win streak of the season, two games. Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) leads DU with 12 goals on the season while sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) is DU’s leading assistman with six.
Denver Head Coach Jamie Munro said, “We are very excited to play Cornell in Dallas. Dallas has become an important recruiting hot bed for Denver Lacrosse; we have four Dallas kids on our roster to prove it! Cornell is one of the premier East Coast lacrosse schools and we look forward to competing against them for the first time.”
The game will represent a homecoming for Highland Park High School graduates John and Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) ’06, and Ryan Fanning (Dallas, Texas) ’07, all of whom play for Denver. All three were key contributors to Highland Park High School back to back Texas High School Lacrosse League Championships in 2004-2005. The Dickenson brothers, both sophomore midfielders, enjoyed successful freshman seasons, as John tallied 14 points and Charley registered 10. Carlos Navarro, Jr. (Dallas, Texas) is a senior defenseman as well as captain on the Pioneer squad. Navarro was named second-team All-Great Western Lacrosse League in 2006. Carlos graduated from Episcopal School of Dallas. Junior Eric Covey (San Antonio, Texas) completes the list of Texans on the Pioneers roster.
“Hosting these two nationally-ranked teams is an honor for Highland Park Lacrosse and our program is particularly proud to be able to welcome home three of our past stars,” said Derek Thomson, Head Coach at Highland Park.
Cornell also features a Texas connection with Episcopal High School (Houston) graduate, Drew Webb (Houston, Texas). A senior on the Big Red squad, Webb was the first two-time U.S. Lacrosse High School All-American in the state of Texas.
Tom Fitzsimmons, US Lacrosse North Texas Chapter President, commented, “All of the NCAA games that have been, or will be, played here in Dallas represent a significant opportunity not only for local lacrosse players and enthusiasts, but the entire state of Texas. Texas is now recognized as one of the fastest growing states for lacrosse and college coaches are actively recruiting our players at all levels of the NCAA as witnessed by the five Texans who will suit up in the Cornell-Denver game.”
