Rams Overcome Slow Start, Handle Texas 13-3

Fort Collins, CO – The #2 Colorado State Rams men’s lacrosse team started slowly in their first home of the year, falling behind 2-0 to the #25 Texas Longhorns in the first quarter before reeling off 13 of the next 14 goals to roll to an easy, but oftentimes lethargic 13-3 victory. The Rams were led by freshmen Paul Larson (Columbine HS; CO) and Cooper Kehoe (Robert Louis Stevenson HS; CA), who each scored 3 goals to lead the Rams to victory on an unseasonably warm afternoon.

Texas started the game well, controlling most of the possession time as they pushed out to a 2-0 lead with 5:52 left in the first quarter. But the CSU defense buckled down after those first two goals, allowing only one more over the remaining 50:52 while the offense slowly got on track. Larson added an assist to his hat trick to give him a game-high four points while sophomore attackman Kevin Wolff (Don Bosco Prep; NJ) pitched in with 2 goals and 1 assist as well. Senior defenseman Tom Fender (Highlands Ranch HS; CO) got on the scoresheet with a coast-to-coast goal during a man-down situation in the fourth quarter.

The Rams enjoyed their first advantage in face-off wins all season as freshman Scott Gelston (Air Academy HS; CO) won 8 of 12 draws on the afternoon. He was aided by fellow freshman Mark Moskovics (Monarch HS; CO), who picked up 5 groundballs while working the wings. Gelston’s play helped CSU win 11 of 18 total face-off attempts.

Senior goaltender Garrett Fitzgerald (Regis Jesuit HS; CO) carried the bulk of the load for the Rams, making 8 saves in over 55 minutes of work while freshman Andy Flax (Steamboat Springs HS; CO) cleaned up the final couple of minutes in the first action of his career. Towers Wilen was solid for the Longhorns, stopping 14 shots in 60 minutes of action.

Colorado State (4-1) faces its most challenging stretch of the season as they trek to San Diego to play three games in three days this weekend. Awaiting the Rams are UC-San Diego, #10 Sonoma State and soon-to-be ranked Loyola Marymount. All three games will be played at UCSD. The Rams then embark on Spring Break before returning home on Tuesday, March 25th to play #6 Oregon.

Kent Denver, Bruins title favorites again

Kent Denver and Cherry Creek have a strategy in preparation for their almost annual state championship meeting. The teams are playing some of the best out-of-state competition in the nation.
Arapahoe has done the same, adding Poway, a top California team, to its schedule. This year, Kent Denver coach Greg Courter’s phone is ringing off the hook with calls from coaches across the country.
“They slapped my ugly mug on the cover of Lacrosse Magazine back in the fall, and it seems like everybody wants to play us now,” Courter said. More Details Here!
