Denver, Colo. - Trailing by as many as nine goals, the Air Force lacrosse team was unable to get past Brown in a 13-7 loss Sunday morning at the annual Pioneer Face-off Classic, hosted by the University of Denver at Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Bears move to 2-2.
Brown scored five unanswered goals in the opening period before a score from junior longstick midfielder Dan Gnazzo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) put the Falcons on the board with 4:18 remaining in the quarter. The Bears extended their advantage to 10-3 at the half, with Air Force’s Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) scoring a pair of man-up goals in the second period.
The Bears shut out the Falcons in the third quarter, getting out to a nine-goal advantage, their largest lead of the game. Although Air Force outscored Brown 4-1 in the final period, including a score with just 33 seconds left on the clock, it was not enough to overcome the early deficit in the 13-7 loss.
Nevitt finished with three goals and an assist. Jack Parchman (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) added a goal and an assist, Ridge Flick (So., Plano, Texas) and Kevin Crumrine (Edgewater, Md.) scored a goal each and David Rose (Sr., Allentown, Pa.) and Peter Krasco (Sr., Medford, Mass.) each added an assist.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Nevitt and Gnazzo were each named to the Pioneer Face-off Classic all-tournament team. Nevitt tallied six goals and an assist on the weekend to lead the Air Force offense. Meanwhile, Gnazzo, who scored his first career goal against the Bears, finished with nine ground balls and three caused turnovers in the two games.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, March 16, when they travel to College Park, Md., to face sixth-ranked Maryland.
