STEALTH STEALS SHOW ON BLACKOUT NIGHT

A standing-room-only crowd of fans dressed in black contributed to a great atmosphere in the stands at Pepsi Center on Saturday night, but the Colorado Mammoth couldn’t match the performance of the San Jose Stealth on the field.

The Stealth used an energetic, physical brand of lacrosse to pull into a first-place tie with the Mammoth in the National Lacrosse League’s West Division with a 12-8 victory. Both teams are 5-3 at the midpoint of the 2008 season and the Mammoth has lost three consecutive games.

“We were not as sharp as we needed to be tonight,” Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. “They took us out of our rhythm a bit and we didn’t match their run in the third quarter.

The Stealth scored the last three goals of the second quarter, taking a 6-4 lead into halftime, and then took control in the third with the help of three power-play goals. After trailing 10-5 the Mammoth cut the deficit to three with nine minutes remaining in the game, but Colin Doyle and Jeff Zywicki both scored to ice the game for San Jose.

The Mammoth wore black uniforms for the first time in the team’s six-year history as part of the night’s “Blackout” theme. The white dasher boards surrounding the field were reversed to black for the game and many of the 18,201 fans in attendance got into the spirit by wearing black shirts and hats.

Doyle led all scorers with eight points on two goals and six assists. Luke Wiles and Frank Resetarits each scored three goals for the Stealth and Jeff Zywicki and Cam Sedgwick each had five assists.

Anthony Cosmo earned the victory on goal for San Jose with 40 saves on 48 shots. Gee Nash took the loss for the Mammoth after allowing 10 goals on 29 shots. Chris Levis allowed two goals in relief of Nash on 10 shots.

Gavin Prout and Brian Langtry led the Mammoth with three points apiece, both scoring one goal and adding two assists.

Falcons Fall to Penn at Pioneer Face-off Classic

Denver, Colo. - Outscored 6-1 in the third period, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 contest to Penn Saturday morning in the first game of the annual Pioneer Face-off Classic, being held at Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the campus of the University of Denver. The Falcons fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Quakers improve to 2-1.
Penn took an early 2-0 lead in the game before a pair of goals by Air Force sophomore Ridge Flick (Plano, Texas), the first of his career, tied the contest with 4:37 remaining in the opening period. Meanwhile, a man-up goal by freshman Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.), assisted by K.J. Landgraf (Jr., Cordova, Md.), gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead after one period.
The two teams traded goals throughout the second quarter before an unassisted goal from junior Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) with just two seconds remaining in the half gave the Falcons a 7-5 advantage going into intermission.
However, Air Force’s lead was short-lived, as Penn rattled off five straight goals to start the period, taking a 10-7 lead before Nevitt scored his third goal of the game to cut the deficit back to two. A man-up goal to end the quarter and an even-strength score to begin the fourth period put the Quakers up 12-8. The Falcons never got closer than three goals the rest of the way, as a man-up goal from senior Kevin Crumrine (Edgewater, Md.) in the final minute of regulation accounted for the final 13-10 score.
While the Falcons were 4-of-7 on extra-man opportunities, Air Force won just eight of 25 face-off attempts. Freshman goalkeepers Brian Wilson (Summit, N.J.) and Woody Johnson (Davidsonville, Md.) combined for 12 saves on the afternoon, while Chris Casey picked up 11 saves in goal for the Quakers.
Flick and Nevitt each finished with three goals to lead the Air Force offense, while Crumrine added two. Jack Parchman (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) notched a goal and an assist, Sandtorv scored one goal and Landgraf and David Rose (Sr., Allentown, Pa.) added goals for the Falcons.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow, March 9, when they face Brown on the final day of the Pioneer Face-off Classic. The game is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
