Minneapolis, MN – The #2 Colorado State Rams scored early and often, running out to an 8-0 halftime advantage over the host Minnesota Gophers on their way to a 12-3 win in the 2nd annual Chris Jenkins Memorial on Saturday evening. The Rams got 3 goals from sophomore Kevin Wolff (Don Bosco Prep, NJ) and 2 goals each from junior Justin Backstrom (Heritage HS, CO) and Clayton Wilbanks (Heritage HS, CO) in the victory.

After surrendering 10 man-up goals in the first two games of the season, CSU’s man-down unit stepped up against the Gophers, shutting out Minnesota’s man-up in six chances. The Rams also had a little more success at the face-off ‘x,’ winning 8 of 19 draw attempts. Freshman Scott Gelston (Air Academy HS, CO) won 6 of 12.

Wolff opened the game with two goals, setting the table for a relatively balanced scoring effort that saw 10 different players register points. Backstrom and Wilbanks were the only other multi-point scorers on the day for CSU. Garrett Fitzgerald (Regis Jesuit, CO) was perfect in one half of play, making 5 saves before giving way to Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS, CO) and freshman Andy Flax (Steamboat Springs HS, CO) in the second half. Minnesota goalie Drew McBeain made 6 saves, giving up 12 goals in the losing effort.

CSU moves to 2-1 on the season and will play #3 Minnesota-Duluth in the final game of the tournament Sunday. The Gophers will take on Boston College.
