Pioneers Edged by Tigers - Senior Jon Paulson records hat trick

TOWSON, Md. – The No. 16 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team could not hold off No. 20 Towson, falling 10-9, on Sunday afternoon at Unitas Stadium.

Denver (1-3) jumped out a 3-0 lead after junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) and senior Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) recorded goals in the opening stanza and junior Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.) added his seventh goal of the season at 11:20 in the second quarter.

Towson (1-1) rattled off three unanswered goals to tie the game at 3-3, but freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) scored with 1:49 left in the half, giving the Pioneers the 4-3 lead at half.

The Tigers ripped off four consecutive goals to a take a 7-4 lead with 5:04 left in the third quarter. With 1:20 left in the third quarter sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) found sophomore John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) for a goal, putting DU within two of the Tigers.

Towson scored the first goal of the fourth quarter but senior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) recorded consecutive goals for the Pioneers to pull Denver within one goal, 8-7, with 7:33 remaining in the game.

The Tigers took a 9-7 lead but Paulson’s third goal of the game once again brought Denver within one at 9-8.

With 29 seconds remaining in the contest Lincoln recorded his second goal of the game, ninth of the season, to tie the game at 9-9. Towson’s Mitchell Rosenweig scored with 18 seconds left in the game, for the game-winning goal.

The Pioneers were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

The Pioneers return home to host the Face-off Classic this weekend. DU will face Brown on Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m., and wrap-up the weekend against Penn on Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. Air Force will play the 11 a.m. game on both days.

The Competitive Athlete Training Zone - CATZ - is the area’s premier sports performance training center. CATZ training is the result of more than 30 years of experience in strength and conditioning and physical therapy. CATZ coaches are degreed and certified and know how to make athletes great.

CATZ LAX Speed-Agility-Quickness

The Competitive Athlete Training Zone - CATZ - offers speed, agility, and quickness training to lacrosse players. CATZ training is dynamic, effective, and fun; you will never do the same workout twice. CATZ workouts are the best and most effective training in the Denver area.

CATZ offers training to individuals, small groups, or teams. CATZ coaches will even come to your practice field to integrate performance training with your regularly scheduled practice.

CATZ is offering a Spring break speed camp 17-21 and 24-28 March. Three training sessions for $49. The training will focus on proper running technique and strengthening the proper muscles groups for maximum performance. The clinic will be held in our facility, so weather won’t be an issue. Colorado College Upsets No. 15 Washington & Lee

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior midfielder Hunter Combs scored four goals and set up two others to lead the Colorado College men’s lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over No. 15 Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon at CC’s Washburn Field.

Combs scored three times and assisted on a fourth tally during an 8-1 run that started at the end of the first quarter and didn’t end until Colorado College had built a 9-3 lead with 3:37 remaining in the first half.

Senior attackers Will Englehart and Ned Rider scored 11 seconds apart to help the Generals shave their deficit to 10-5 at the half, then W&L scored the first three goals of the third period to pull to within 10-8 with 9:16 to play in the period.

Sophomore attacker Brendan Gangl scored a pair of goals 1:35 apart to give CC a four-goal cushion, and after junior midfielder Harry St. John struck for his team-leading third goal of the game while a man up, freshman attacker Joe Boyle and sophomore midfielder Kyle Bishop found the net in a span of 51 seconds to put the Tigers ahead by five goals with 12:29 to go.

Freshman Scott MacAurthur made seven saves to earn the victory in his first collegiate start. Junior Connor Locke stopped 14 shots for the Generals.

CC had a 43-34 edge in overall shots, including a 29-18 advantage in shots on goal. Washington & Lee won 19 of 13 faceoffs, but that performance was negated by 23 turnovers, compared to 17 for Colorado College.

Senior attacker Tom Dugan had three goals and an assist, while Gangle finished with two goals and two helpers. Boyle had a team-high three assists for the Tigers.

Sophomore attacker Will Keigler led the Generals with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. Rider finished with two goals and two assists.

Colorado College will be off until March 10 when the Tigers play host to Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Washburn Field.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Colorado College senior midfielder Hunter Combs registered four goals and two assists as the Tigers upset 15th-ranked Washington & Lee in mens lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Washburn Field in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Colorado College (1-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter (13:41), but the Generals responded with a goal apiece from sophomore attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) and junior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex)to take a 2-1 edge with 10:32 left in the opening period. The Tigers would then score five-unanswered goals between the first and second quarters, taking a 6-2 advantage with 10:57 left in the second en route to a 10-5 half-time lead.

The Generals (2-1) fought back in the third quarter with scores from Keigler, St. John and junior attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) to cut CCs lead to 10-8 at the 9:16 mark of the third. However, CC got two immediate scores from sophomore attackman Brendan Gangl and took a 12-8 lead with 6:31 to play in the third quarter as it held on for the 15-11 win.

W&L was led by St. John, who had a trio of goals, and Keiglers two goals and three assists. Senior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) added two goals and two assists, while senior attackman Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) contributed two tallies and one assist. Junior goalkeeper Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes) played the duration for W&L and racked up 14 saves.

For the Tigers, Combs effort was complemented by senior midfielder Tom Dugans three goals and one helper. Freshman attacker Joe Boyle tallied one goal and three assists, while Gangl had two goals and two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Scott MacArthur played the entire game between the pipes for CC, notching seven saves.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Washington College at 1:00 pm.
