Boston, MA–Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today that the 2008 Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 8:00 PM MDT at Denver’s INVESCO Field at Mile High, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross.

The game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2, will once again feature the popular Bud Light Skills Competition during halftime. Tickets to the event are on sale now and begin at just $10 for general admission. Individual tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling 303-830-TIXS (8497) or 719-520-9090. Group tickets are available by phone by calling 303-Outlaws, and online at www.denveroutlaws.com.

INVESCO Field is home to the MLL’s Denver Outlaws. Since joining the league in 2006, the Outlaws have made it to the post-season each year. Off the field, Denver has enjoyed some of the best attendance figures in the League. The Denver Outlaws inaugural game at INVESCO Field set what at the time was a league record with 13,167 fans in attendance, a record which was broken later that season at another Denver home game. In 2007, the Denver Outlaws set a professional lacrosse attendance record when 19,793 fans attended their match against the Chicago Machine on July 4th.

“Denver was a natural choice for All-Star this year,” said Gross. “The crowds for their regular season match-ups have been amazing and each game has had a tremendous energy. We’re looking forward to this being a remarkable event.”

The All-Star game has been held in Boston the past two seasons. The 2007 All-Star game featured an East versus West format for the first time in league history. Denver was also the site of the 2005 MLL All-Star Game prior to the arrival of the Outlaws.

“This is a great opportunity for our organization and the Outlaws are thrilled to be hosting the 2008 All-Star Game at INVESCO Field,” said Mac Freeman, Vice President of Edge Sports and Entertainment, which oversees business operations for the Outlaws. “This is also a great reward for our loyal fans, who have really shown their love and enthusiasm for the game of lacrosse over the past two seasons.”

Halftime’s popular Bud Light Skills Competition will again be featured as part of the ESPN2 broadcast. The Bud Light Skills Competition is comprised of the Fastest Shot, Most Accurate, and Free Style Events.

In 2007, Denver’s Brian Langtry won the Fastest Shot Competition with a recorded shot speed of 104 miles per hour. A record shot speed of 109 miles per hour was set by former Boston Cannon Dave Evans at the 2004 All-Star Game. The 2007 Accuracy Contest was won by the Los Angeles Riptide’s Spencer Ford, and Mike Powell of the Boston Cannons walked away with the Freestyle Competition title for the second consecutive year.

Last year, Boston midfielder Matt Poskay scored four goals for the Eastern Conference, including a two-pointer, on his way to earning Bud Light MVP honors in front of his home town fans. The Eastern Conference defeated their Western Conference counterparts by a final score of 19-12.

Major League Lacrosse, a ten-team professional outdoor lacrosse league, was founded in 1999 by fitness entrepreneur Jake Steinfeld, CEO of Body by Jake Global L.L.C., and founding partners Dave Morrow, a former champion lacrosse player and now CEO of Warrior Lacrosse, a leading global provider of innovative and high performance lacrosse equipment; Timothy B. Robertson, former CEO of The Family Channel and the current chairman of Bay Shore Enterprises, L.L.C., an investment holding company with activities in international media and Internet technology ventures; and Jim Davis, chairman and CEO of New Balance. The MLL commenced play in June of 2001. The MLL is comprised of two conferences. The Eastern Conference contains the original six teams, Boston, Long Island, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Rochester and Washington. The Western Conference debuted in the 2006 season with MLL expansion franchises Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco. US Lacrosse: 10 Tips for Buying a Safe Lacrosse Helmet

BALTIMORE, Md. — Is your child considering playing the sport of lacrosse this spring? Safety is always the number one goal when outfitting a lacrosse player. US Lacrosse and its Sports Science & Safety Committee offer 10 tips to parents and players when shopping for a new lacrosse helmet.

1. Make sure the helmet is NOCSAE approved. The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment conducts rigorous tests and sets standards for safe athletic equipment, including lacrosse helmets.

2. Helmets are measured in inches. Check manufacturers’ charts to show the proper size helmet for your child’s head.

3. A helmet should sit squarely on the head, with the front of the helmet approximately one finger width above the eyebrows. This way, the helmet will protect the forehead.

4. Padding of the helmet shall give firm and uniform pressure about the head. The skin of the forehead should move as the helmet is moved from left to right and from front to back.

5. Be sure there is a four-point chin-strap attached to the helmet. The chin-strap should be tightened so that there is no slack.

6. Properly fitted helmets must take into account the hairstyle of your child; if your child has a great deal of thick hair and then receives a summer haircut, the helmet must then be refitted.

7. Proper helmet fit should never cause headaches.

8. Always remember to replace screws and t-nuts on the helmet at the beginning of each season.

9. The facemask should attach cleanly to the helmet and should be replaced if it is bent.

10. Always review the specific helmet manufacturer’s recommendations for proper helmet fitting either on the manufacturer’s website or in the store.

Falcons Host Providence to Open 2008 Season (2.22.08)

The Air Force lacrosse team opens its 2008 season at home, hosting Providence College in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The game is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. at Cadet Lacrosse Stadium.

Scouting the Falcons…
Air Force, which went 2-10 last season, look to rebuild in 2008 after losing three of its top four scorers from a year ago to graduation. Returning to lead the Falcons’ offense in 2008 are junior Griffin Nevitt, a preseason honorable mention All-American, and senior co-captain Kevin Crumrine.

Meanwhile, the defense returns some key figures in senior co-captain Lukas Fisher and junior David Mackintosh, as well as junior long-stick midfielder Dan Gnazzo. However, there will be a new face in goal for the Falcons, as senior Clayton Cruickshank battles with freshmen Woody Johnson, Kyle Rich and Brian Wilson for the starting spot.

Scouting the Friars…
Tuesday’s game will be the second of the season for Providence, which will open the season Saturday, Feb. 23, at home against Fairfield.
The Friars compiled a 7-10 record in 2007 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to eventual runner-up Duke.
Among the leading returnees for the Friars are Devin McBride and Bennett Murphy. McBride and Murphy each scored a team-leading 21 goals in 2007, while adding six and five assists, respectively.

The Teams…
• Air Force will be playing in its first game of the season.
• Providence will be playing in its second game of the season after opening with a contest versus Fairfield on Feb. 23.

The Coaches…
• Air Force is coached by Fred Acee, in his 11th season with the Falcons. Acee holds a 347-214-1 career record (40 years) and a 35-95 mark at the Academy.
• Providence is coached by Chris Burdick, in his ninth season at the helm of the Friars’ program. Burdick holds a 67-78 career record at PC.

Series Records…
Air Force and Providence have met twice before, with each team winning a contest. Air Force won the first meeting between the two teams, a 9-8 overtime decision in 2001, while Providence won the last meeting, an 8-7 contest in 2002.

Season Openers…
The Falcons are 28-13 all-time in season openers and have won three of their last four season openers.
Air Force opens the season at home for the second year in a row and just the third time since 2002. It also marks the second straight year the Falcons have started the season against an opponent from the MAAC. The Falcons picked up an 11-7 home win over Siena to start the 2007 season.

Preseason All-American…
Junior Griffin Nevitt became the latest Air Force lacrosse player to earn preseason All-America honors. Nevitt, a native of Charlotte, N.C., was named a preseason honorable mention All-America selection by Face-Off Yearbook. Nevitt, who scored 19 goals and 15 assists last season, was a first-team All-GWLL selection at midfield in 2007.

Keep the Streak Alive…
Junior Griffin Nevitt will look to keep his scoring streak alive this week, as the midfielder has scored at least one goal or assist in 25 consecutive games. Nevitt, who has 45 goals and 24 assists in his career, has scored in 27 of 28 games in his first two seasons.

New in Net…
For a second straight season, the Falcons will have to find a new starter at the goalkeeper position. Senior Clayton Cruickshank, who has played in one game in his career, is the only goalie with collegiate experience. Meanwhile, freshmen Woody Johnson, Kyle Rich and Brian Wilson will compete with Cruickshank for the starting spot.

Up Next…
Air Force visits service academy rival Army next weekend, March 1. The Falcons and Black Knights will face off at 12:00 p.m. (ET) at Michie Stadium.
