The Colorado Mammoth and Calgary Roughnecks renew their rivalry Sunday across the Canadian border. The Mammoth looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season, a 15-12 defeat to the Philadelphia Wings, when it faces off against the Roughnecks at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta.
The Mammoth came from behind to beat Calgary at Pepsi Center on Opening Night (Dec. 29) of the National Lacrosse League season after scoring just twice in the first half. Goaltender Steve Dietrich was stellar in his first game for the Roughnecks, but the Mammoth rallied for a 10-9 victory
The Colorado-Calgary West Division rivalry has grown into one of the league’s best, with the Mammoth leading the all-time series 7-6. There have been two overtime games and nine games have been decided by three goals or less. The teams have split the six games played in Calgary.
Coming into this weekend Mammoth forward Gavin Prout is the top assist man in the NLL with 32 and is among the top 10 in scoring with 39 points. Forward Dan Carey leads the team with 16 goals and finds himself among the league’s top-10 snipers.
Calgary’s Lewis Ratcliff isn’t afraid of letting it rip as he is the frontrunner in the NLL with 107 shots and leads the Roughnecks with 14 goals.

The Colorado Mammoth has now officially seen Bob Hamley come and go. The Edmonton Rush announced that Hamley has been named the team’s new general manager and head coach.
Hamley was in Colorado for just six games as an assistant coach to Bob McMahon and is leaving Colorado with a West Division-best 5-1 record.
“Although it was for a short period of time, we thank Bob for his service to our organization,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “He is a terrific coach and leader and we wish him the best of luck in his new role.”
Hamley, who will be relocating to Edmonton, replaces Paul Day, who was fired after compiling a 6-36 record in two-plus seasons with the Rush.
“We are excited about Bob’s plans for the Rush and we are confident that he is the right person — the right new voice — to be leading the club to greater success,” Rush president Duane Vienneau said.
Former Rush players Jamey Bowen and Chris Stachniak will join Hamley as assistant coaches.
“Bob is a proven winner, he has a great track record and great credentials,” Vienneau said. “The entire organization is looking forward to working with Bob and hopefully we can soon start seeing this team live up to the high expectations that everyone, especially our fans, has for the players and coaching staff.”
Hamley has a 46-42 career record as an NLL head coach, guiding Arizona to the Champion’s Cup Final in 2005 and 2007. He was the winner of the Les Bartley Award for coach of the year and was named general manager of the year in 2005.
Hamley played four seasons in the league for the Buffalo Bandits, notching 105 points in 31 regular season games.
