WINGS, MAMMOTH FACEOFF - IN BATTLE OF UNBEATEN TEAMS

At 5-0, the Colorado Mammoth is off to the best start in team history and is the only unbeaten team in the National Lacrosse League’s West Division. Friday, the Mammoth carry its momentum into a match against one of the East Division’s undefeated teams, the Philadelphia Wings.

Hard-hitting, passionate and entertaining, Wings-Mammoth games have also been very evenly matched. Each team has scored 60 goals in five games against one another, but Philadelphia owns a 3-2 advantage in wins. The winning team has scored 13 goals in four of the five games.

The Wings fly into Denver after a scheduling quirk gave them three weeks off. January’s NLL player of the month, Athan Ianucci, leads the team with 14 goals while rookie of the month Merrick Thomson has 17 points. Former University of Denver star Geoff Snider is the league’s top faceoff man and veteran Jake Bergey is off to a strong start with 12 goals in three games.

“It will be a very tough game for us,” Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. “They have some superstars. They’ve changed the face of their team a bit and turned into a real good ball club.”

Gajic in transition
After a spectacular game last week, Mammoth transition player Nenad Gajic is back among the team’s scoring leaders. He registered two goals and a season-high four assists against the Portland LumberJax on Feb. 7 to give him 11 points on the season. He also picked up five loose balls, placing him second on the team with 35.

“Nenad is one of the more athletic guys on our team,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “He has an unlimited amount of talent and is only going to get better. Although he is young, we expect big things out of him on a nightly basis.”
