After a strong start to the season, the Colorado Mammoth is looking to improve to 5-0 for the first time in team history when the Portland LumberJax come knocking on Thursday at Pepsi Center.
The Mammoth, which got off to a 4-0 start last season as well, sits atop the National Lacrosse League’s West Division, while Portland is in fourth place at 1-3.
Colorado has won four straight games over its division rivals from the Pacific Northwest, including a 12-11 overtime victory at Portland’s Rose Garden on Jan. 24. The Mammoth swept the three-game series against the Jax last season by a combined score of 38-26.
Gavin Prout, the Mammoth captain since 2006, leads the team with 25 points, including a two-goal, five-assist performance in the Mammoth’s last game, a home victory against the San Jose Stealth on Jan. 26.
“We’ve been really motivated by the great crowds,” Prout said of the Mammoth’s 3-0 mark at home so far this season. “It’s hard not to get pumped up and to give your all when you have 18,000 screaming fans behind you.”
Prout, who reached the 500-point milestone last year, is on pace to once again be among the league scoring leaders. He enters this weekend with an NLL-best 20 assists.
Meanwhile, the LumberJax are fresh off their first win of the season, an 11-10 triumph over the Edmonton Rush. Dan Dawson and Derek Malawsky lead the team with 10 goals apiece and tenacious transition man Brodie Merrill leads the league with 54 loose balls.
