Air Force Set to Visit Service-Academy Rival Army

The Air Force lacrosse team is back in action this weekend, March 1, for a non-conference road match-up against service-academy rival Army. The game is slated to start at 12:00 p.m. at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.
Broadcast Info…
Live audio/video of the Air Force-Army game will be made available for a fee on Knight Vision, Army’s broadband channel. Live stats will also be accessible from goARMYsports.com.
The Teams…
• Air Force enters this weekend’s contest with a 1-0 record.
• Army enters this weekend’s contest with 1-1 record.
The Coaches…
• Air Force is coached by Fred Acee, in his 11th season with the Falcons. Acee holds a 348-214-1 career record (41st year) and a 36-95 mark at the Academy.
• Army is coached by Joe Alberici, in his third season at the helm of the Black Knights’ program. Alberici holds a 23-23 career record (fourth year) and a 15-17 mark at West Point.
Series Records…
Air Force and Army have met 15 times before, with the Black Knights undefeated against the Falcons. The contests between the two teams have gone to overtime in three of the last five years.

Scouting the Falcons…
Air Force (1-0) got its season to a solid start with an 8-7 overtime victory over visiting Providence earlier this week. Leading the way for the Falcons with a career-best five goals, including the gamewinner, was senior David Rose. Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Brian Wilson picked up his first career win, recording seven saves in the victory.
Scouting the Black Knights…
Army (1-1) is coming off a close 8-7 loss to eighth-ranked Syracuse, after beginning the season with a 16-3 win over VMI.
The Black Knights are led by Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Adam Fullerton. The senior goalkeeper has averaged nine saves in his first two games and holds a 5.82 GAA. Meanwhile, Justin Bokmeyer (6g, 1a) and Rob McCallion (4g, 3a) lead the Army offense with seven points each.
A Career Day For Rosie…
Senior David Rose was instrumental in the Falcons’ win over Providence earlier this week, scoring five of the team’s eight goals, including the gamewinner in overtime. Rose, who had scored just two goals in his career prior to Tuesday’s contest, took just five shots in the game, scoring on all of them.
Season Openers…
With their win over Providence, the Falcons are now 29-13 all-time in season openers and have won four of their last five season openers.
Air Force opened the season at home for the second year in a row and just the third time since 2002. This season also marks the second straight year the Falcons have started the season against an opponent from the MAAC. The Falcons picked up an 11-7 home win over Siena to start the 2007 season.
Keep the Streak Alive…
Junior Griffin Nevitt will look to keep his scoring streak alive this weekend, as the midfielder has scored at least one goal or assist in 26 consecutive games. Nevitt, who has 45 goals and 25 assists in his career, has scored in 28 of 29 games in his career.
New in Net…
For the second straight season, the Falcons have had to find a new starter at the goalkeeper position. Getting the nod in the first game of the season was freshman Brian Wilson, who tallied seven saves with seven goals against. Other goalkeepers battling for starting time are senior Clayton Cruickshank, who has played in one game in his career, and freshmen Woody Johnson and Kyle Rich.
The Falcons in OT…
Air Force’s game against Providence broke a six-game losing streak in overtime contests. The last time the Falcons won in overtime was in 2001. The opponent in that game was Providence.
Up Next…
Air Force takes on a pair of Ivy League teams next week, March 8-9, at the annual Pioneer Face-off Classic, hosted by Denver. The Falcons will meet up with Penn on Saturday, before facing Brown on Sunday. Both games are slated to start at 11:00 a.m. at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

NLL ADDS SIMS, MURRAY TO WEST ALL-STAR TEAM

The National Lacrosse League announced on Wednesday that Colorado Mammoth defenseman Bruce Murray and transition player Josh Sims have been named reserves for the West Division All-Star team.

The 2008 NLL All-Star Game will be played at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Mountain time.

Sims will make his second consecutive appearance in the All-Star Game, while Murray will be making his first All-Star appearance.

“I’m very happy for our players,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “We have five players going to the All-Star Game and they’ve all worked hard. It’s something our entire team can be proud of.”

Mammoth forwards Dan Carey and Gavin Prout, and goaltender Gee Nash were named starters for the West All-Stars in an announcement on Monday.

Each All-Star team named 12 reserves on Wednesday in addition to the six starters that were previously announced. West All-Stars head coach Bob Hamley of the Edmonton Rush and assistant coach Walt Christianson of the San Jose Stealth selected nine reserves and three were appointed by the league.

Air Force Defeats Providence, 8-7, in Overtime to Open Season

USAFA, Colo. - A career day for senior David Rose (Allentown, Pa.) helped lead the Air Force lacrosse team to an 8-7 overtime victory over Providence Tuesday afternoon at Cadet Lacrosse Stadium. Rose, who had scored two career goals entering today’s contest, notched five against Providence, including the gamewinner with 1:42 remaining in the extra period. The Falcons, playing in their season opener, started the year at 1-0, while the Friars fell to 0-2, with both losses coming in overtime.
Air Force got on the board early in the contest with an unassisted score from junior K.J. Landgraf (Cordova, Md.), while Providence’s Devin McBride tied the score at 1-1 with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter. Another score from McBride in the second period gave the Friars their first lead of the game before freshman Tristan Newkirk (Albany, N.Y.) tied it back up for the Falcons with an assist from Jack Parchman (Sr., Baltimore, Md.). With 1:18 remaining in the opening half, Providence scored once more to take a 3-2 lead.
More than eight minutes went by in the third period before either team scored, as Rose notched his first goal of the game, on a feed from junior Griffin Nevitt (Charlottle, N.C.) to tie the game once more. Again, the Friars had a response, scoring at the 4:44 mark in the period, but the Falcons came right back with two more scores from Rose. Just 16 seconds after an assisted goal from long-stick midfielder Dan Gnazzo (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), Rose scored an unassisted man-up goal to give Air Force the 5-4 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Rose continued his streak in the fourth quarter, scoring with 10:33 remaining in regulation, while junior Brian Massa (Jamesville, N.Y.) gave the Falcons a three-goal cushion just over two minutes later. However, Providence went on a run, scoring three unanswered goals, including a man-up score with just one minute left in the fourth period. With neither team able to score in the waning moments, the contest went into overtime.
Following a strong defensive stand, Air Force called a timeout to set up its offense. The strategy worked, as Rose was again able to go in for an unassisted score with 1:42 to play, giving the Falcons the 8-7 win.
Newcomer Brian Wilson (Summit, N.J.) recorded seven saves in goal for the Falcons, while Gnazzo was stout on defense, causing three turnovers, including one in overtime to set up Air Force’s winning possession.
Air Force is back in action this weekend, March 1, when they head to West Point, N.Y., to face service academy rival Army. The game, slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. (ET), will be held at Michie Stadium.

CAREY, NASH, PROUT TO START FOR WEST ALL-STARS

The National Lacrosse League announced Monday that Colorado Mammoth forwards Dan Carey and Gavin Prout, and goaltender Gee Nash have been selected for the starting lineup of the West Division All-Star team.

The 2008 NLL All-Star Game will be played at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Mountain time.

Carey, an All-Star in each of his three seasons in the NLL, will make his second consecutive appearance in the starting lineup. He leads the Mammoth with 17 goals.

Nash will make his fourth All-Star appearance in five years and second start. He leads the NLL with a 10.10 goals-against average and is tied for fifth with a .768 save percentage.

Prout will make his fifth consecutive appearance in the All-Star Game and third start. He leads the NLL with 34 assists and leads the Mammoth with 43 points.

“I’m very excited for these guys,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “They are the leaders of our team and have shown what it takes to compete with the best in the league.”

Carey, Nash and Prout will join forward Jeff Zywicki and defenseman Eric Martin of the San Jose Stealth, and Portland LumberJax transition player Brodie Merrill as starters for the West.

The West and East Division All-Star teams were determined by the combined votes of the league’s general managers and head coaches, league media, and fans, who voted online.

The West Division All-Stars will be coached by Edmonton Rush coach Bob Hamley with Stealth coach Walt Christianson serving as his assistant. The East Division All-Stars will be coached by Rochester Knighthawks coach Ed Comeau with Buffalo Bandits coach Darris Kilgour serving as his assistant. The four All-Star Game coaches are the head coaches who led their teams to the Division Finals last season.

The 12 reserves for the West and East teams will be announced later this week.

Rams Drop Season Opener in Overtime to Division III Tigers

Colorado Springs, CO – The #2 Colorado State Rams rallied from a 9-6 deficit with just over five minutes remaining to force overtime against Division III Colorado College on Saturday at Washburn Field in Colorado Springs. But the Tigers capitalized on the opening face-off of the sudden death period when Brendan Gangl scored on an uncontested shot to win 11-10 and give the Tigers their first victory over CSU since 2003. The Tigers capitalized on 5 of 7 man-up opportunities and got 4 goals from midfielder Hunter Combs as the Rams fell in their opening contest of the season.
After leading the Tigers 4-2 at halftime, the Rams gave up five straight goals in the first eight minutes of the third quarter. The CSU settled defense was stingy but penalties ultimately undid the Rams as the Tigers gained momentum with their man-up success.
CSU’s new look attack had 12 points on the afternoon as sophomore Kevin Wolff (Don Bosco Prep HS, NJ) netted 3 goals to go along with 3 assists to lead all scorers. Freshman Paul Larson (Columbine HS, CO) also had 4 goals as the young Rams showed a lot of heart before ultimately succumbing. Senior midfielder Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill HS, CO) pitched in with 1 goal and 3 assists as well.
While the game was sloppy at times for both teams trying to clear the ball, the final five minutes was an entertaining slugfest. Larson sandwiched two goals around a Wolff man-up tally to tie the game 9-9 with 1:39 left but CC answered when Hunter Combs blistered home a shot 29 seconds later. Undaunted, the Rams fought back to tie it again when Wolff caught a feed from MacDonald and finished with just 16 seconds left in the contest.
Senior Garrett Fitzgerald (Regis Jesuit HS, CO) played admirably in goal, registering 13 saves while playing all 60:21 in the loss. The Tigers used three freshmen goalies but it was Scott MacArthur’s 10 saves in 30:21 of second half action that sealed the victory.
Next up for the Rams (0-1) is a trip to Minnesota next weekend for the 2nd annual Chris Jenkins Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota. CSU will play three games in three days against #7 Boston College, Minnesota and #4 Minnesota-Duluth in a grueling test.

No. 16 Denver Falls to No. 9 North Carolina, 6-5 - Austin Konkel registers career best 16 saves in net for DU and Jamie Lincoln records two goals

DENVER – The No. 16 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team fell to visiting No. 9 North Carolina at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium Saturday afternoon. Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Catheriens, Ontario) had two goals in the loss.

Denver (1-1-0) received goals from four different players in the loss, and seven Pioneers recorded points. Junior goalie Austin Konkel (Aurora, Colo.) had a career-best 16 saves while Grant Zimmerman made 10 for North Carolina.

“I think we played hard today,” head coach Jamie Munro said. “Our defense played solid. We have to give credit to North Carolina. They played well and managed to hold down our good players.”

The Pioneers got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead just 1:59 into the first quarter when freshman Emerson Eichler (New Vernon, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season on an assist from junior Kyle Widerstedt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

With 3:28 remaining in the first period, Lincoln buried a pass from sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) to give Denver a 2-0 lead.

North Carolina (2-0-0) narrowed the score to 2-1 with a goal by Gavin Petracca from Bart Wagner at the 2:26 mark of the second period.

Senior Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) again put the Pioneers ahead by two, at 3-1, with a shorthanded goal 13:29 into the second period. Sophomore Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B. C.) assisted Koll on the man-down scoring effort.

However, the Tar Heels responded less than one minute later to again make it a one-goal game with a Cryder DiPietro goal.

The teams headed to the lockerrooms with Denver leading 3-2.

North Carolina evened the score at 3-3 when Petracca netted his second goal of the game just 51 seconds into the third period.

After over 13 minutes of scoreless play, the Tar Heels took their first lead of the game when Mathias McCall scored off an assist from Billy Bitter to put UNC up 4-3 with 53 seconds remaining in the period.

North Carolina went up 5-3 with 14:18 to play in the fourth period when Rob Driscoll scored the game-winning goal.

The Pioneers made it a 5-4 game on their first shot on goal of the second half. With 9:06 remaining in the fourth period, senior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) scored off a pass from Dickenson for the sophomore’s second assist of the game.

With 4:30 to play, North Carolina’s Sean Delaney scored what proved to be the game-winner for the Tar Heels when he put the visitors ahead by two at 6-4.

Lincoln netted his second goal of the game with just 25 seconds remaining, bringing the Pioneers within one at 6-5.

Denver had just eight shots in the second half, with one in the third period, after recording 15 in the opening half.

The Pioneers open their 2008 road schedule on March 1 at UMBC at 11 a.m. before taking on Towson on March 2 at 11 a.m. Denver return to action at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for the Face-Off Classic on March 8 when they take on Brown at 1:30 p.m.

INVESCO Field is home to the MLL’s Denver Outlaws. Since joining the league in 2006, the Outlaws have made it to the post-season each year. Off the field, Denver has enjoyed some of the best attendance figures in the League. The Denver Outlaws inaugural game at INVESCO Field set what at the time was a league record with 13,167 fans in attendance, a record which was broken later that season at another Denver home game. In 2007, the Denver Outlaws set a professional lacrosse attendance record when 19,793 fans attended their match against the Chicago Machine on July 4th.

“Denver was a natural choice for All-Star this year,” said Gross. “The crowds for their regular season match-ups have been amazing and each game has had a tremendous energy. We’re looking forward to this being a remarkable event.”

The All-Star game has been held in Boston the past two seasons. The 2007 All-Star game featured an East versus West format for the first time in league history. Denver was also the site of the 2005 MLL All-Star Game prior to the arrival of the Outlaws.

“This is a great opportunity for our organization and the Outlaws are thrilled to be hosting the 2008 All-Star Game at INVESCO Field,” said Mac Freeman, Vice President of Edge Sports and Entertainment, which oversees business operations for the Outlaws. “This is also a great reward for our loyal fans, who have really shown their love and enthusiasm for the game of lacrosse over the past two seasons.”

Halftime’s popular Bud Light Skills Competition will again be featured as part of the ESPN2 broadcast. The Bud Light Skills Competition is comprised of the Fastest Shot, Most Accurate, and Free Style Events.

In 2007, Denver’s Brian Langtry won the Fastest Shot Competition with a recorded shot speed of 104 miles per hour. A record shot speed of 109 miles per hour was set by former Boston Cannon Dave Evans at the 2004 All-Star Game. The 2007 Accuracy Contest was won by the Los Angeles Riptide’s Spencer Ford, and Mike Powell of the Boston Cannons walked away with the Freestyle Competition title for the second consecutive year.

Last year, Boston midfielder Matt Poskay scored four goals for the Eastern Conference, including a two-pointer, on his way to earning Bud Light MVP honors in front of his home town fans. The Eastern Conference defeated their Western Conference counterparts by a final score of 19-12.

Major League Lacrosse, a ten-team professional outdoor lacrosse league, was founded in 1999 by fitness entrepreneur Jake Steinfeld, CEO of Body by Jake Global L.L.C., and founding partners Dave Morrow, a former champion lacrosse player and now CEO of Warrior Lacrosse, a leading global provider of innovative and high performance lacrosse equipment; Timothy B. US Lacrosse: 10 Tips for Buying a Safe Lacrosse Helmet

BALTIMORE, Md. — Is your child considering playing the sport of lacrosse this spring? Safety is always the number one goal when outfitting a lacrosse player. US Lacrosse and its Sports Science & Safety Committee offer 10 tips to parents and players when shopping for a new lacrosse helmet.

1. Make sure the helmet is NOCSAE approved. The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment conducts rigorous tests and sets standards for safe athletic equipment, including lacrosse helmets.

2. Helmets are measured in inches. Check manufacturers’ charts to show the proper size helmet for your child’s head.

3. A helmet should sit squarely on the head, with the front of the helmet approximately one finger width above the eyebrows. This way, the helmet will protect the forehead.

4. Padding of the helmet shall give firm and uniform pressure about the head. The skin of the forehead should move as the helmet is moved from left to right and from front to back.

5. Be sure there is a four-point chin-strap attached to the helmet. The chin-strap should be tightened so that there is no slack.

6. Properly fitted helmets must take into account the hairstyle of your child; if your child has a great deal of thick hair and then receives a summer haircut, the helmet must then be refitted.

7. Proper helmet fit should never cause headaches.

8. Always remember to replace screws and t-nuts on the helmet at the beginning of each season.

9. The facemask should attach cleanly to the helmet and should be replaced if it is bent.

10. Always review the specific helmet manufacturer’s recommendations for proper helmet fitting either on the manufacturer’s website or in the store.

Falcons Host Providence to Open 2008 Season (2.22.08)

The Air Force lacrosse team opens its 2008 season at home, hosting Providence College in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The game is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. at Cadet Lacrosse Stadium.

Scouting the Falcons…
Air Force, which went 2-10 last season, look to rebuild in 2008 after losing three of its top four scorers from a year ago to graduation. Returning to lead the Falcons’ offense in 2008 are junior Griffin Nevitt, a preseason honorable mention All-American, and senior co-captain Kevin Crumrine.

Meanwhile, the defense returns some key figures in senior co-captain Lukas Fisher and junior David Mackintosh, as well as junior long-stick midfielder Dan Gnazzo. However, there will be a new face in goal for the Falcons, as senior Clayton Cruickshank battles with freshmen Woody Johnson, Kyle Rich and Brian Wilson for the starting spot.

Scouting the Friars…
Tuesday’s game will be the second of the season for Providence, which will open the season Saturday, Feb. 23, at home against Fairfield.
The Friars compiled a 7-10 record in 2007 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to eventual runner-up Duke.
Among the leading returnees for the Friars are Devin McBride and Bennett Murphy. McBride and Murphy each scored a team-leading 21 goals in 2007, while adding six and five assists, respectively.

The Teams…
• Air Force will be playing in its first game of the season.
• Providence will be playing in its second game of the season after opening with a contest versus Fairfield on Feb. 23.

The Coaches…
• Air Force is coached by Fred Acee, in his 11th season with the Falcons. Acee holds a 347-214-1 career record (40 years) and a 35-95 mark at the Academy.
• Providence is coached by Chris Burdick, in his ninth season at the helm of the Friars’ program. Burdick holds a 67-78 career record at PC.

Series Records…
Air Force and Providence have met twice before, with each team winning a contest. Air Force won the first meeting between the two teams, a 9-8 overtime decision in 2001, while Providence won the last meeting, an 8-7 contest in 2002.

Season Openers…
The Falcons are 28-13 all-time in season openers and have won three of their last four season openers.
Air Force opens the season at home for the second year in a row and just the third time since 2002. It also marks the second straight year the Falcons have started the season against an opponent from the MAAC. The Falcons picked up an 11-7 home win over Siena to start the 2007 season.

Preseason All-American…
Junior Griffin Nevitt became the latest Air Force lacrosse player to earn preseason All-America honors. Nevitt, a native of Charlotte, N.C., was named a preseason honorable mention All-America selection by Face-Off Yearbook. Nevitt, who scored 19 goals and 15 assists last season, was a first-team All-GWLL selection at midfield in 2007.

Keep the Streak Alive…
Junior Griffin Nevitt will look to keep his scoring streak alive this week, as the midfielder has scored at least one goal or assist in 25 consecutive games. Nevitt, who has 45 goals and 24 assists in his career, has scored in 27 of 28 games in his first two seasons.

New in Net…
For a second straight season, the Falcons will have to find a new starter at the goalkeeper position. Senior Clayton Cruickshank, who has played in one game in his career, is the only goalie with collegiate experience. Meanwhile, freshmen Woody Johnson, Kyle Rich and Brian Wilson will compete with Cruickshank for the starting spot.

Up Next…
Air Force visits service academy rival Army next weekend, March 1. The Falcons and Black Knights will face off at 12:00 p.m. (ET) at Michie Stadium.
