DU Men’s Lacrosse Announces 2008 Schedule

DU Men’s Lacrosse Announces 2008 Schedule
Pioneers set to face five 2007 postseason teams

DENVER – University of Denver men’s lacrosse coach Jamie Munro has announced its 2008 schedule today. The schedule features five Great Western Lacrosse League match-ups, two neutral site games and two tournaments, including the first-ever GWLL Tournament.

“The 2008 schedule is one of the most competitive in the nation,” Munro said. DU finished 2007 with a 9-7 overall record and a 3-2 record in the Great Western Lacrosse League for a third-place finish. Denver returns 16 players from a year ago and adds 21.
The Pioneers kick off 2008 on Feb. 9 in a scrimmage against Air Force, a team Denver will also face at the Air Force Academy on April 26 to conclude the season.

DU’s home regular season begins with No. 21 Colgate and No. 5 North Carolina. DU will face a pair of Ivy League schools, Brown and Penn, in the Face-off Classic March 8-9. The Pioneers wrap up nonconference play at home against Presbyterian and Harvard.

“We are thrilled to host Brown and Penn in the Pioneer Faceoff classic and our Colgate, North Carolina, and Harvard games give us a home non-conference schedule full of programs with great tradition,” said Munro.

Denver will host Quinnipiac and Bellarmine at home in GWLL action. DU will travel to face No. 25 Ohio State at the Horseshoe.

“The Ohio State game will be played at the famed horseshoe just before the spring football game,” said Munro. “Finally, the GWLL will be stronger than ever as we host Quinnipiac and Bellarmine and travel to Air Force before the first ever GWLL conference tourney to be played at Birmingham Seaholm HS.”
The Pioneers will face No. 7 Cornell, who advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, in Dallas on March 18 and face preseason GWLL first place team Notre Dame in Chicago on April 5.

“We play Notre Dame and Cornell in Chicago and Dallas respectively which gives us a chance to play in front of great fans in important recruiting hotbeds,” said Munro.

DU will face No. 15 UMBC, No. 13 Towson and Stony Brook on the road in nonconference action.

If DU finishes in the top-four of the GWLL, it will participate in the first ever GWLL postseason tournament in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

GALLANT NAMED ASSISTANT CAPTAIN

GALLANT NAMED ASSISTANT CAPTAIN

The Colorado Mammoth has named John Gallant an assistant captain for the 2008 season.

A 6-foot, 185-pound defenseman, Gallant has been one of the Mammoth’s most consistent performers. The Brantford, Ontario, native played in 63 consecutive regular season games before missing the final game of the 2006 season with a spleen injury. He returned in time to appear in the title game and win the 2006 NLL championship with his teammates.

“John is a veteran player and a leader of our club on and off the floor,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “He leads by example and gives maximum effort every game.”

Gallant, who signed a three-year contract in November, has been with the Mammoth since the team began playing in Denver five years ago. He joins fellow defenseman Pat Coyle as an alternate to captain Gavin Prout.
