STILLEY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

STILLEY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Colorado Mammoth defenseman Dave Stilley, a fan favorite since joining the team during its inaugural season in Denver, announced his retirement Tuesday after 10 seasons in the National Lacrosse League.

In an address to Mammoth fans, Stilley said:

“I have decided after 10 years in the NLL to retire as a proud member of the best organization in the league, the Colorado Mammoth. It was one of the heaviest decisions I have had to make in my life. My love for my teammates, coaches, staff and, most of all, the wonderful fans of the Colorado Mammoth cannot be measured. I have created a lifetime of unbelievable memories which I will cherish forever.

“My commitments to my amazing wife and daughter and my career in commercial real estate will leave me committed less than 100 percent to the team, which is not fair to all of you. It has been an amazing opportunity to be so welcomed to a city and such a wonderful family. I look forward to being in the stands and joining the best fans in the NLL in watching the Mammoth continue its success. Thanks to the Kroenke Sports staff for setting new heights in professionalism and pro sports. You have all enriched my life beyond comprehension.”

After winning two championships with the Philadelphia Wings, Stilley was traded to Colorado midway through the 2003 season. He quickly endeared himself to fans with his tenacity, ability and willingness to stick up for his teammates.

Stilley, 34, played in 60 regular season games for the Mammoth. He also appeared in all eight of the team’s playoff matches, including three in 2006 when the team won the NLL championship.

“I want to thank Dave for everything he has meant to this organization,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “I truly believe he has been the glue that has held it together for the last five years. He is a ‘heart and soul’ guy and those don’t come along very often.”

A native of Philadelphia, Stilley graduated from Duke University, where he was a first-team All-American in 1996 and 1997. He lives in Edgewater, Colo., with his wife, Patrice, and daughter, Vivian.
