National Lacrosse League: Top guns re-sign with Mammoth

DENVER – The Colorado Mammoth re-signed some of its top offensive threats Wednesday, agreeing to terms with forwards Gavin Prout, Dan Carey and Jamie Shewchuk. The team also announced the signings of rookie forward Ryan Zordani and defenseman Bruce Murray.

Prout, whose one-year contract is pending National Lacrosse League approval, ranked fourth in league scoring last season and led the Mammoth with 89 points on the strength of 30 goals and 59 assists. The Mammoth captain made his fifth NLL All-Star Game appearance and led his team to the West Division title and its fifth consecutive playoff berth.

“Gavin is a tremendous player and has been a great leader of our team both on and off the floor,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “We are looking for big things from him this season and to continue to be one of the game’s best.”

Prout, who has averaged better than 84 points per season during his six-year career, eclipsed the 500-point mark last season en route to his fourth All-Pro distinction.

Carey, who signed for three years, led the Mammoth with 32 goals last season and tied for second in the NLL with four game-winning goals.

Shewchuk signed a two-year deal after leading NLL rookies with 26 assists last season. He was the Mammoth’s fourth-leading scorer with 53 points after the team made him its second selection in the 2006 entry draft.
