Dr. Tom Watts Memorial Boy’s U-19 Division

Division I
Championship Bracket Semifinals

Arizona 19, Colorado 9
It what was the first major upset of the Dr. Tom Watts Memorial U-19 tournament, Arizona pounded Colorado into the ground. Colorado’s defense couldn’t slow down a powerful attack combo of Wilson and Moore. The two attackmen from Western Reserve Academy in Ohio combined for thirteen of Arizona’s nineteen goals.

Arizona attacked the goal in multiple ways exposing serious flaws in the Colorado defense and getting many good looks from the middle of the field. After missing several chances early, Arizona was able to settle down and finish many of their opportunities during the rest of the game.

Colorado did a good job early on in the game and was winning 3-1 after the end of the first quarter. After teams traded goals to start the 2nd Arizona unleashed their full offensive fury and scored six unanswered goals to give them an 8-4 halftime lead. Arizona extended their lead to six after the 3rd and iced the game with a five goal fourth quarter.

Arizona will have a tough match up with Baltimore tomorrow for the Division I championship. So far in the tournament, they have done a good job of possessing the ball and with their excellent face-off group can really control the tempo of the game. The face-off group only lost seven draws all day and five of those losses came on illegal procedure calls. Their offense is extremely talented and should give them the ability to win them the game if they can get a very deep Baltimore out of their game.

Baltimore 7, Ohio 6

In by far the most exciting game of the tourney, Baltimore was able to hold of a hard charging Ohio team to advance to the championship. It was a remarkably intense game that was a nail biter right to the end.

These two evenly matched teams fought up and down the field for four quarters with both teams not giving an inch. Both defenses played well and every possession was very valuable in this tight game.

Ohio made a couple of serious runs at the Baltimore Crabs and even was able to tie the score at 5-5. They were just unable to overcome Baltimore’s depth and early lead.

For the Crabs, Reed had another solid performance scoring three goals. In net for Baltimore, Chris has a good game stopping eight shots. He helped cleared the ball sixteen times successfully for the Crabs and is making a strong case for making the All-Tournament Team.

Baltimore will go into tomorrow’s game as the odds on favorite to take home the trophy. They should be wary of a talented Arizona team that shocked Colorado today. The Crabs will have to slow down Arizona’s face-off unit which has been dominant all tournament. If the Crabs get good possessions they match up favorably with the Arizona defense and should have a good chance to score a lot of goals.

Supermasters (+40)

Supermasters Semifinals

CVLC/Tsunami 9, Navy Old Goats 6
This semifinal proved to be a thriller that no one expected as the Cinderella squad of CVLC/Tsunami took down a very talented Navy team. Navy led the game until the second half when a run of back and forth goals ended with CVLC/Tsunami on top. Both teams fought hard but Navy could not find the net leaving their comeback efforts thwarted. Tournament director Flip Naumburg summed it up best by saying, “Navy just got sunk.”

Elder Statesmen 11, Try-City Canadians 5
Not even help from the legend Gary Gait could get the Canadians past last years Supermasters champions the Elder Statesmen. The Canadians had trouble clearing the ball all day, and only did it successfully seven times. Clearing proved to be the Canadian’s downfall as they didn’t even give their talented offense a chance to keep them in the game. To their credit the Elder Statesmen controlled the ball well and finished their chances when they got them.

Grandmasters (50+)

Fridays Results

Los Viejos 11, Navy 2
This match up looked more like a game against family than a game against one’s enemy. There was great sportsmanship between both teams although Navy couldn’t pull of the win no one could ever have guessed that they lost.

USA Stars 8, Rockies 4
In a good game between two teams with a lot of experience, the USA starts were able to limit the Rockies offense. Philip Strain had all four goals for the Rockies and the score would have been a lot worse if it had not been for the great play of the Rockies goaltender.

Saturday’s Schedule
All Games Start at 8:30am
