Denver Outlaws Update Coaching Staff

Denver Outlaws Update Coaching Staff
GM Brian Reese takes coaching reins

Denver-June 29, 2007- The Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse announced today that for the time being, General Manager Brian Reese will take over the majority of the Head Coaching duties currently occupied by Jim Beardmore.

Beardmore will remain with the team as an Associate Head Coach. All other staff members will remain the same.

The Outlaws sit at 2-3 on the season and have struggled to find the form that led them to the Western Conference Championship one year ago.

Outlaws GM and newly appointed Head Coach Brian Reese said that, “This move was made to assist Jim with his role as a coach and to give him a more experienced set of eyes on the sideline.”

“I have been involved in this league since it started and I have a strong knowledge of personnel and tendencies,” Reese said. “Coach Beardmore felt that having me on the sideline to assist him was necessary for the success of the team.”

Reese also feels as though the move can help shake things up with the team and get them back on the winning side of things.

“This is a move to help our team get back on the right track and winning games, which I know we will do,” Reese said.

Reese has always had a presence on the sidelines for the Outlaws and starting this Saturday night in Chicago against the Machine, he will step into the Head Coaching position.

NCAA makes rule changes

NCAA makes rule changes

June 27, 2007

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO — The NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Rules Committee reviewed its rules and made several proposed alterations to encourage safe and fair play at its June 17-20 meeting. The committee’s actions must be considered by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel before final implementation.

The committee reviewed numerous proposals from the coaching community, including a change to when timeouts may be called. In the committee’s proposal, teams will be allowed to request a timeout anytime they are in clear possession of the ball as well as after the scoring of a goal. Teams remain limited to two timeouts per game.

“This issue had strong support on our survey and the committee received numerous proposals for this change,” said Karen Borbee, chair of the committee and senior woman administrator/women’s lacrosse coach at Swarthmore College.

The committee also approved an altered definition of marking within a stick’s length. The new definition will not allow a combined arm and stick’s length as the distance considered to be marking an opponent. In the new definition, the length of the stick is the determining factor.

“The committee believes this will address several concerns with three seconds and shooting space fouls,” Borbee said. Additionally, to encourage increased enforcement and understanding of crosse to body contact, the committee added another example of illegal use of the stick. This additional description

identifies lowering the head of the stick below the shoulder and initiating crosse to body contact as a major foul.

“These changes are intended to address the growing concern regarding rough play in our game,” Borbee said.

Finally, the committee approved its points of emphasis for the 2008 season, including instructing umpires to examine defensive offsides and three seconds calls with regard to advantage.

A complete listing of rules changes will be distributed to member institutions and posted on the NCAA Website for comment before the oversight panel considers the proposals.

The current members of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Rules Committee are: Danie Caro, Quinnipiac University; Kelly Amonte Hiller, Northwestern University, vice chair; Jenny Levy, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Barbara Questa, St. Bonaventure University; Cecil Pilson, Mercyhurst College; Karen Borbee, Swarthmore College, chair; Christine Paradis, Amherst College; Kathy Railey, Villa Julie College; and Pat Dillon, secretary-rules editor.

Kim Basner, national coordinator of officials, and Laura Hebert, US Lacrosse, attended the meeting as non-voting umpiring liaisons.

Outlaws out for revenge against Chicago

Outlaws out for revenge against Chicago
Denver hopes to avoid three -straight losses

Denver-June 28, 2007- The Denver Outlaws hit the road on Saturday, June 30, to take on the Chicago Machine. Outlaws attackman Matt Brown, fresh off a five goal performance a week ago, leads the Outlaws into battle against their division rival. Brown has scored a team-high 17 goals through 5 games this season.

The Machine enter the game in last place in the Western Conference, with a 1-4 record on the year. The Outlaws sit at 2-3, which puts them under .500 for the first time in franchise history and in a tie for second in the division.

Each team will be looking to bounce back from tough losses in their last game. Last Saturday, the Machine dropped their game against the L.A. Riptide by a final score of 21-13. L.A. jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and coasted from there, as the Machine lost their league-high third straight game.

Last weekend, Denver lost their second straight game. Denver’s 20-14 loss came at the hands of the San Francisco Dragons. The Outlaws led 8-6 at the halftime break, but five goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter gave the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish on their way to an important 20-14 win.

Chicago is looking to get back on the winning side of things, as their only win of the season and in franchise history came at home against the Outlaws, back on June 2, 2007.

For the Outlaws, this weekend’s game is the start of a key home and home series against the Chicago Machine over the next two weeks. Denver hopes to get back on track and avenge their early season loss, while climbing back into the Western Conference race.

Dr. Tom Watts Memorial Boy’s U-19 Division

The boy’s U-19 tournament saw some great plays and even better teamwork during the first day of games.

In the most competitive game of the day the Baltimore Crabs found themselves well matched with Team Arizona. Baltimore led most of the way, but Arizona fought hard and kept it close the whole time. Both teams benefited from solid goaltending, but Arizona had trouble limiting Baltimore’s solid offense. The Crabs pulled out the 9-7 victory on the strength of their talented attack duo of Reed and Hessler. They combined for nine points in the game and sixteen points on the day. With the Crabs’ morning victory over Midwest Elite 14-1, Baltimore again find themselves in the Division I bracket. The Crabs draw the 3:00pm game against Team Idaho, who will be making their first Division I appearance.

Delaware won both their games today and displayed a powerful offense along the way. In their first game Delaware defeated Team Indiana 14-6 on the back of an eight point performance by Kyle Wharton (7g, 1a). In their second game against Idaho, Delaware trailed early but came back to dominate the game with a 15-4 victory. Delaware will be playing Arizona at 1:00 pm in what should prove to be one of the most competitive quarterfinal games.

The perennially solid team from Ohio was in fine form today as they limited their opponents to three total goals in their two games. Team Ohio beat both Sacramento Elite and Triad Lacrosse Club by scores of 16-2 and 9-1 respectively. Ohio will face the Winnipeg Wolverines at 9:00 am in the first game of the day for Division I.

Team Colorado was also dominant during pool play winning both their first round games by comfortable margins. Colorado showed plenty of offensive firepower finishing with 33 goals, more than any other team during the first day. Controlling both games Colorado downed Winnipeg in their first game 16-6 and in their second game beat FLC 17-1. The home team will play Triad Lacrosse Club at 11:00 am on Thursday.

Men’s Supermasters (age 40+)

It was a great day for the Supermasters division that offered the most competitive first round games of the 35th annual Vail Lacrosse Shootout. In all four of the nine Supermasters games were decided by one goal, making for some of the hardest fought games in the entire tournament.

With 17 teams in this year’s Supermasters division, Essian\Tap Room and Lacrosse.com teams played a “play-in” game to get into the championship bracket. It was a gritty game with Essian\Tap Room coming out on top 6-5. Essian\Tap Room’s next game was arguably the most exciting game of the day. Facing Tsunami\CVLC, the Essian\Tap Room team started out on fire scoring the first 5 goals. Tsunami\CVLC was determined not to go down quietly and scored three goals in the last 1:47 to send the game to overtime. It was only 1:14 into overtime when Tsunami/CVLC’s Leo Pates scored his third goal of the day to give the win to his team and send them into a winner’s bracket. The Magic Wands played a nail biter against Boathouse\Rock-it Pocket coming from behind to win in the 4th quarter. The Wands, needing four goals and an assist from Dave King, won 9-8. In a lopsided affair Tombstone defeated Lacrosse Wear 15-9. Fresh off last year’s semi-final appearance the Tri-City Canadians won 11-7 against the Air Force Graybirds. The Navy Old Goats got by a solid NYAC 11-6. The Frogs gave the Colorado Lacrosse Club all they could handle. The CLC had to withstand a flurry of shots at the end to preserve their one goal victory. In the final two games, the Elder Statesmen advanced over Cactus Lacrosse, and Middlebury topped the Princeton Obsoletes.

Outlaws Head to San Francisco to Face Dragons

Outlaws Head to San Francisco to Face Dragons
Denver looks to improve to 3-2 with a win

Denver - June 21, 2007- The Denver Outlaws hit the road on Saturday, June 23, to take on the San Francisco Dragons. Outlaws attackman Brendan Mundorf, with a team-high 14 goals this season to go along with 6 assists, leads the Outlaws into battle against their division rival.

The Dragons enter the game in last place in the Western Conference, with a 1-3 record on the year. The Outlaws sit at 2-2, which puts them in second place in the division.

Each team will be looking to bounce back after tough one-goal losses in their last game. Last Saturday, the Dragons dropped a close one at home against the L.A. Riptide. L.A. picked up the 14-13 victory on a Wes Green goal with 10 seconds left in regulation. Denver also lost a heartbreaker, as they fell to the Rochester Rattlers by a score of 27-26 in the highest scoring game in Major League Lacrosse history.

San Francisco is looking to get back on the winning side of things and move up the Western Conference standings. The Dragons, behind head coach Brian Silcott, are looking to get their first home win of the 2007 season. Star attackman Ryan Powell, with 8 goals and 8 assists on the year, hopes to have a breakout game against Outlaws goalie Trevor Tierney and help the Dragons get the victory.

The Outlaws will be shooting for a big performance from their standout lineup, as they try to pick up their third win of the year and get in the hunt for another regular season Western Conference title.

Outlaws Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime

Outlaws Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime
Denver loses to Rochester 27-26

Denver–June 16, 2007 –. - Midfielder Colin Doyle scored the game-winning
goal with 6:32 remaining in overtime as the Rochester Rattlers (2-2) won
their second straight game, a 27-26 victory over the Denver Outlaws (2-2)
in the highest scoring game in MLL history at INVESCO Field at Mile High
on Saturday evening.

Doyle, who scored two goals with four assists in the win, converted a pass
from attackman Jeff Zwyicki to end the Rattlers’ five-game road losing
streak, dating back to last season.

The Rattlers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first eight minutes as
Zwyicki scored three times while Bud Light MVP John Grant, Jr. tallied two
of his team record-tying eight goals during the spurt. After the teams
traded goals twice, the Outlaws scored three quick points to narrow the
margin to 8-5 at the end of the first quarter.

The teams traded goals four times during the second and third quarters
before Denver tallied five unanswered goals to take a 15-13 lead with 4:41
left in the third quarter. Attackman Matt Brown scored three goals during
the spurt, which gave the Outlaws their first lead of the game.

Zwyicki ended the Outlaws’ run with an unassisted goal, but attackman
Brendan Mundorf answered by converting a feed from attackman Mike Law past
goalkeeper Mike Levin, which was followed by a Grant tally to end the
third quarter with Denver holding a slim one-point advantage.

Midfielder Chris Schiller tied the game just six seconds into the fourth
quarter, which was followed by back-to-back two-point goals from Langtry
and attackman Matt Hanna for a four-point advantage. However, the Rattlers
countered by scoring three straight goals, including a two-pointer from
attackman Joe Walters, to tie the game at 22-22.

Led by two goals from Langtry, the Outlaws regained a four-point advantage
with a three-point run with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter. Grant scored
his second two-point tally of the game with 2:19 left, an unassisted
marker past goalkeeper Trevor Tierney, before Zwyicki tied the game
with 1:51 left off a Grant assist.

Rookie attackman Drew Westervelt scored with 54 seconds remaining off a
feed from midfielder Jeff Sonke to give Denver a two-point lead before
Grant tied the game with a two-point goal with 39 seconds left in
regulation.

After Walters hit the crossbar earlier in overtime, Doyle provided the
game-winner to give Rochester its first win on the road since June 3 of
last season at Los Angeles.

Grant led the Rattlers to the victory by tying the Major League Lacrosse
single-game record with 14 points, scoring eight goals, including a pair
of two-point tallies, along with four assists. His eight goals tied the
Rochester team record set by Casey Powell during the 2003 season.
Zwyicki scored a career-high six goals and added three assists.

Langtry led the Outlaws in the loss with a team-high five goals, including
a pair of two-point markers, along with an assist while Brown and Mundorf
each tallied five goals with an assist. Snider won 28 of 56 face-offs and
also had a goal with an assist.
